Because there's more than one!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painkiller_(video_game)
Painkiller is a first-person shooter video game released on April 12, 2004. It was published by DreamCatcher Interactive and developed by Polish game studio People Can Fly. It attempts to replicate the 'old-school FPS' gameplay of Doom and Quake. It has 24 levels of seemingly unconnected designs that include medieval castles, factories and lunatic asylums. Five of the levels are 'boss levels' with some of the largest FPS bosses to date. The game takes place in Purgatory and Hell. It is notable for using the Havok 2.0 physics engine extensively. The main character, Daniel Garner, is voiced by Cam Clarke.

Painkiller:
The game revolves around a young man named Daniel Garner, who is happily married to his wife Catherine. At the start of the game, Daniel is about to take Catherine out for a birthday meal. As they drive towards their destination at high speed, in the pouring rain, Daniel takes his eyes off the road to look at his wife and while his attention is diverted, he ploughs their car into a truck. Both of them are killed instantly.

While Catherine manages to make it to Heaven and lives in harmony, Daniel is trapped in Purgatory and is told that in order to receive purification, he has to kill four of Lucifer's generals in order to prevent a war between Heaven and Hell. With little choice available to him Daniel accepts the task.

Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell:

Just when you thought you killed all the pain, it's time for another dose! (aww yeah, that's so cool 8-))
Painkiller: Battle out of Hell is an expansion pack for Painkiller, released on November 22, 2004. It was developed and published by the same companies as Painkiller. Battle Out of Hell features an all-new 10-level single player campaign, two new weapons (each taking a page out of the original game's book with two fire modes each), new multiplayer modes, and improved visual effects.

Painkiller: Overdose

Oh no, you took too much, you stupid dick! You should go to a hospital. Or kill some dudes. 8-)
Another Painkiller game, titled Painkiller: Overdose, was released for Windows on October 30, 2007 worldwide. Originally being developed by Mindware Studios from Czech Republic as a fan-made game mod, DreamCatcher granted the project full financial and technical support. In Overdose, the player takes the role of Belial, a half-angel, half-demon gatekeeper. The game contains 6 new weapons, 40 monster types and 16 new levels. The story is said to tie wandering ends and provide a bridge between the original game and a potential sequel.

A true Painkiller sequel is also in the works.

Did they fix the problem with Painkiller if you have a Dual-Core machine?

    It runs at double-speed. :|

No. There isn't more than one. Overdose didn't happen.

The one Painkiller game that did exist was pretty fun though, and the expansion was alright.

Yeah, I wish they'd fix that. Lucky I tried the demo on this machine first.

High level Painkiller is boring as balls. It apes Quake 1/CPMA, but everything is dumbed down.

Having said that, the single player was enjoyable, and the stake gun was fun enough.

I'm playing on a dual core machine and it might run twice as fast, but if it does, it's a lot more fun that way

Fun game. Available on both GOG and Steam for $10. Or on gametap if you swing that way.

There's an LP of this on the Somethingawful forums if you want to see what the gameplay is like.

At the very least watch an episode to hear Psychedelic Eyeball's mesmerizing accent.

So yeah, Overdose is the worst thing in the world.

I still load it up to play the dark-ages zombie village with the stake gun every now and then. They really nailed the feel of that weapon. Also, sticking things to walls never, ever gets old.
    I'm not sorry

Overdose is really that bad, huh? I like the aesthetics a lot, vanilla PK gets a bit tiring after chapter 3 or so.

It ran really poorly on my machine for some reason. Also, a few of the enemies were ridiculously bugged, and the whole thing was lacking polish in a big way. I remember playing through it and thinking it felt like a mediocre fan-made expansion, and then I found out it was.

The nailgun in F.E.A.R. is still the better of the two I think, if only because (IIRC) any enemy hit by the nail will keep flying until they're pinned to the wall.

Also, while fighting the big boss with the hammer, I used my gold cards right as he hit me and got knocked out of the map. I got so high that I actually died before I hit the ground.

Psychadellic Eyeball also had a part in the Overdose LP.

Also, if someone decides they want to pick up the game digitally, you can get a whole $1 off at GOG if you use the code PCG1.

Tried the demo once (dock level?). It seemed OK, but to be honest I'm not sure whether there's enough creativity in there to carry it through a whole campaign.

I remember Serious Sam used to make interesting use of waves and rushes, and some loopy room designs. Doom II had some good innovations in levels that kept me playing (Ticks and Traps was a favourite). Does painkiller keep things fresh and interesting throughout, or is it just simply a batch of corridors and arena's without much flair?

The SomethingAwful LP. It's not terribly exciting to watch, but might give you an idea of how it plays. If you've played Serious Sam before, it's basically the horror themed version of it.

But it also made me want to hurt the people who made Overdose

To be fair, the guy who recorded the Overdose LP took part in the Painkiller race videos and his load times were shit there, too. Apparently he has some problem loading slowly when recording video. Someone who has played Overdose could say how bad the load times really are.

I always wanted to play the first ones, but never got around to it after acquiring a PC. Now that I've got a nice, powerful gaming rig, I'll probably give this sequel a fair shake. Hopefully it will be a true sequel in the sense that it retains all the awesomeness I've heard attributed to the first one.
