The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm opening this thread in search of 5 players for a maptools/ventrilo game. I will want to see submitted characters on MythWeaver. Sessions will be weekly 8pm - midnight saturdays. That's Eastern Time U.S.
This will be my first 4e game as a DM. Although I have DMed 3rd, as well as shadowrun versions. I've been playing 4e and have an understanding of the rules.
This is going to be a homebrew setting for level 4 characters. Looking for a nice balanced party. If you want to insure a slot it may be a good idea to send me two characters. I'll be deciding based on Party Balance, firstly, and character design second. The group will be a somewhat new adventuring party that has worked in the past to spare the pains of finding vague reasons why the characters meet up and decide to go to Troughbridge.
Gamestyle will be somewhat dungeon crawly with chances for RPing.
Ok. On characer creation. Players start at level 4. Take your hundred gold and grab what supplies you want with that, I'll allow each player to have one level 6, 5, and 4 item. So that's 3 magic items total. Note that you may select an item of lower level if you wish to do so. All classes and races in the PHB 1 or 2 accepted with the exception of the warforged. Im just not into it.

Are we supposed to follow the guidelines for creating PCs above level 1? That is, should we start ourselves with more gold and the 3 magic items the books recommend?

You should really give them the standard gold/items as per guidelines. 4e is pretty strictly balanced and you'd be fucking everyone over without that extra bit of power.
Also, ban monster races that can use oversized weapons. And stop hating on the 'forged, you racist fuck.

PHB backgrounds are fine by me. As are scales of war. Since this isnt FR we'll not use their backgrounds.
I have no intention of nerfing my party. I want to see if the interest is for high magic, or low, or standard. But in retrospect I dont see any issue with starting with your three magic items and higer starting gold.
Go ahead and follow the guidelines in PHB for starting characters at a level higher than one.
I would like to keep this running as an extended campaign.
Warforged will not be allowed. Sorry Mega, as I said. Im just not into it.
"Greetings John Conner. I am on a quest to enter
dungeons, and also to slay some dragons and shit.
Come with me if you want to live. Also, I'll be back."
Ok well I can play at that time, here's a Deva Avenger (I made him for another campaign so some of the fluff needs to be reworked for your custom setting) and Im working on a Warden. Ill post him later. So hope I get in! I doubt Ill have a problem playing either character.

And here's the Goliath Warden. This guy doesnt have a backstory yet, but as a rough outline Im thinkin maybe he was part of a tribe (from where ever goliaths are from in your place) that got raided or attacked or in some other way destroyed (BBEG doin evil things causing awful weather on our place or somethin?) and so I go off to investigate and find the party.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, as for these:
Magic: as long as it doesnt restrict us (stuff like NO WIZARDS or ONLY ONE MAGIC USER) I dont mind magic being uncommon, though common is also cool with me.
Magic Items: Bout the same as magic for me, I would not object to having large magical items being quest points. IE: to get the Super Sword of Awesome we have to go though an ordeal to find out where it is, how to get there, and how to actually obtain it. Id be fine with intelligent items but it seems like it might be more work for you.
Monsters: I havent really had any bad experiences with anything in 4e. I dunno if they've been updated but no Rust Monsters. God, Rust Monsters can go die in a fire.
Setting: Setting doesnt really bother me too much, I can be happy in most anything, as long as I know about it and can tailor my character to it.
Atmosphere: Im good with just about anything, but I dont want just... silly. Im cool with elements of it (crazy old man who lives in the tower has traps that are just water balloons or somethin) but I wouldnt want everything to be like that.
Bah. Give me an effing break. Terminator has no place in DnD and as far as Im concerned allowing players to run dragonborn is far enough. I'll roll with dragonborn, fine, at least it has a place in the universe but the warforged can go ahead and rot for all I care. You want to play a robot, go play Star Wars. This is DnD. We don't serve your kind here. Sorry pal. Instead of making a fuss over it just roll a different race. Dead set on playing warforged? Fine. Play in another campaign.

This is horrendously off topic but why? Technically, there should be no problem with the warforged in a fantasy setting because like a lot of the other races Wizard just stole the idea from history.
I offer this Ranger and this Fighter for your consideration. I'd prefer to use the Ranger, I think.
One thought I had on the setting was a sort of fantasy version 17th/18th century Europe, only sans gunpowder. There are still large expanses of total wilderness, like the Black Forest, but there are also significant areas of civilization, with healthy, functioning cities and cultivated countryside. Sorta of like a Brothers Grimm story come to life.
nice looking chars runner. I noticed you didnt grab any magical items. I should edit the OP to reflect the change I decided on to allow one 6the, one 5th, and one 4th level magic item at start.
Ya, originally I wanted to see if the party wanted to go with low magic or not. So far there doesn't seem to be a preference so I'm just rolling with standard.
I'll post an Invoker I just finished tinkering with soon. Would it be alright if he has a feat from the latest Dragon (374)? It's in the "Ecology of the Deva" article.
Battle Intuition Prerequisite: Deva Benefit: You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Dexterity modifier to determine your initiative bonus. Additionally, you gain a +2 feat bonus to initiative checks.

Oh, I made my guys with the standard from the DMG (one item of level+1, =, -1, and money equal to an item level -1). I can change that if you'd like.
I dont see any problem with using that feat probad. I don't personally have a subscription to dragon so if you want to use stuff from them make sure ALL info is recorded on your character sheet for easy reference.
Ok, so I was lookin around for level 6 items and that is slim pickings, is there any chance I can opt out of that and use the standard? I could drop the level 2 items I picked up with the gold and just say I used the level 6 slot to get a level 3 if that works for you but theres pretty much only "Magic" for level 6 and Id rather have an ability if its all the same to you.
Ok so far we have two strikers and two defenders submitted.. Two of them will be chosen for the game and we have a 3rd striker being prepared.. So that still leaves space for a controller and a leader. BTW I'm planing on ramping up the difficulty a bit to keep the players on their toes. So you'll definitely need a leader. And I do mean need.
I'll be uploading more chars to mythweaver over the week, so I can use one of them instead to rebalance the party if needed. I'm attached to my Ranger right now, but that's only because he's my newest, so if I make a new leader class between now and the 9th, my attention will transfer over to him. 4th Ed is the only D&D I've ever played, though, so I'm new to the game, especially compared to the lifers who have copies of AD&D on their shelf. (So, fair warning before I become the linchpin to our team's survival.)
I'm planing on ramping up the difficulty a bit to keep the players on their toes.
I do have a question for you or any other long time D&Der about a discrepancy between pen and paper RPGs and their electronic offspring. Generally, how do DMs react to PCs attempting to flee? (aka, "option 4" [well, option 5 on this list])
Edit: Cuz in video game RPGs, I am CONSTANTLY having to beat feet, as I've a tendency to wander. Hell, running away was the centerpiece of my strategy in Dragon Warrior.
Also, how do you specifically intent to respond to it?
Haha. Well. Naturally running away is an option, and may be the best option depending on the situation... Enemies next to you will get an attack of oppurtunity if you beat feet. Depending on your speed and their speed they may follow or not.
Example... Lets imagine that your party is attacked by 20 dark ones. You fight bravely but they outnumber too badly. So it's tactical retreat. Any monster standing right next to a player when the player turns and runs will get to make a basic melee attack. Also if you run near an enemy they will get an AoO as well. So now you are running. At full run your gnome ranger goes 12 spaces a turn. ( speed 5 +2 for running, times two if you use your standard action as a move action. ) You may notice your bigger fellows who aren't wearing heavy armor are outpacing you. Also, the dark ones are gaining on you too! ( speed 6 +2 x 2 = 16 )... Looks like you'll have to do something to slow them or turn and fight after all!
So basically.. running away will only be effective if you can outrun a monster or otherwise obstruct pursuit.
But yes, in some cases it would work. But, while I want this game to be slightly challenging, I wouldn't throw an impossible encounter at you guys.... or would I?
Yea I dled the books and so far it looks way easier then 3.5 I can't decide if that's good or not yet though XD Dual wielding seems significantly worse which makes me sad.
Can I trade in one of my items for the corresponding amount of gold? I want to pick up the enchant magic item ritual and 2 level 2 items instead of the level 6. My sheet has been changed to reflect this, however if you don't like it, and that goes for the shaman multiclass as well, I'll switch it back.
Incas - I thank you for your submission but, although your concept is interesting, Im afraid it may be somewhat distracting.. and, I never thought I would have to say this.. Im afraid it might be a little much... With that being said, and, I hope not to offend you, if you want to submit your invoker I will consider it.. but I think the druid/cleric combo will work well for leader and controller slots... this gives us one opening for a striker. Or really, any other class now that all teh bases are covered... although I think the wisest choices would be another striker or a second defender.
Shananiganeer - Im ok with you trading the item for an equal ammount of gold. The freebie magic items reflect approximately where your character should be at this point, if you want to trade in one for some gold and buy lower level stuff thats ok with me but bear in mind you may be lessening your combat potential somewhat in doing so... the choice is yours... btw I like how you've made sure yours heals will count.
So... Recruitment is nearly complete. Looking for one more character... Our first session will be starting at 8 pm this coming saturday. I realize that not everyone will be able to make every single game and that's ok, just make sure you have your mythweaver's page filled out (that includes the texts for each power) so that other players may easily run your characters in the event you cannot make a game. That being said... if a player misses games often, his/her slot will open up.. so if you want to play.. then play...
Bottom line... looking for one more... Incas post your invoker up, any other characters will be considered...
Bear in mind.. after the first segment of the plot line I will allow you guys to shuffle roles if you like.. Also.. on character building, Im ok with you guys shifting some attributes or powers around if you decide you want to tweak your characters after we begin..
As for players new to this system.. As lardalish said it really doesnt take long to get the hang of.. I personally feel it's the most player friendly dnd edition I've seen.. Also, as I have said, this will be my first attempt at DMing 4e, so I have no doubt that I may make a mistake or two with the rulings... feel free to correct any errors on my part as I am learning still too... My 4e experience is about 2 months now as a player. My DMing style is lenient, but don't try to take advantage of it..

Edit: Nevermind, I should actually learn to read.

Heh, thanks. If I get picked I can go over the fluff stuff to fit into yours, but until then the Warden will probly stay vague like that.

The backstory is flexible, I just want him to be pursuing some greater evil.
And to the couple people who are new to 4e, its not hard to pick up and we'll help ya out of course.

will bring an invoker later.
This is how I see the group as it stands.
We had two submissions for defender classes.
Of the two, one player is admittedly new to this system and I feel it would be best to have the more experienced player in the defender slot.
Goliath Warrior - Lardalish.
Gnome Ranger - Tunnelrunner
Human Cleric - Shananiganeer
Shifter Druid - Probad
