So this just started happening today. Instead of the usual ads for games etc, I'm getting ads for Viagra and the like. I did a full sweep, prior to boot (using avast), an I'm doing a full scan now too.
The sweep prior to boot didn't find anything at all, so am I missing something? Reccommend me some better software if needed, I don't know.
Although for those that use adblock, please know that ads are the way we are able to provide Penny Arcade for free.
Do you get paid for the ads when they come up, or only if they are clicked on? If you get it just for the ads showing up I'll set PA as an exception so they show.
We get paid for ads when they show up. We don't do any CPA or CPC (Cost per acquisition/Cost per Click) campaigns as it represents a bit of a conflict of interest. Thanks!
Welp, Ad-Aware didn't kill it, Avast didn't kill it. Spybot won't install as it can't register with its homepage. Anyone else got any ideas or recommendations? Please?

Didn't know that. I'll be adding PA as an exception!
Sorry to bring this back up, but I've decided to to do a full wipe of this laptop, as nothing I do seems to fix my problem, and I need some advice. Obviously I need all the drivers associated with the model, touchpad and wireless card, etc, which I will get on my office pc before I do anything, BUT, I don't have my XP install CD anywhere.
I still have the sticker on the laptop with the product key. I know talking about this may be against the rules, but I hope since I own it legally it won't be: Can I download/torrent the XP install disc iso to do a reinstall, considering I have a legal, purchased product key?
If this is against the forum rules, please let me know and I'll edit it out right away.

I have PA set as an exception, but it seems that Flash ads are frequently served and I don't allow Flash at all in Firefox (the Linux version of Flash in particular is very prone to crashing your browser).

Before you try a full wipe, try the Major Geek Squad malware removal forum. My girlfriend's laptop had something very similar to yours and just as tenacious, after I followed their step by step guide (it goes into exhaustive detail and you have to do every bit) I managed to clear that bastard Trojan out with an extra bit of help from one of their advisors.

Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa. Before you do anything. Whoa there.
Give Malwarebytes Anti-malware a try before you do anything rash. I've been using this in my corporate environment with excellent results. It's only another 20 minutes of time before trying to wipe your laptop anyhow. Just make sure to update the program after you install it and before you run a scan anytime after that (they update constantly). It's fixed problems that we typically had to image machines for because Ad-aware and Spybot couldn't pick them up.
Also, your laptop may have either a recovery disc with it which should have all the necessary components needed for doing a full re-install. If it didn't come with one, you may have a recovery partition. If you lost the particular disc, you should be able to order one through your vendor. Check into that before you start treading in what is, at best, a copyright infringement grey area.
Awesome advice guys, thanks alot. I've held off on doing a wipe and re-install, as that was just frustration seeping in. I'll give Malwarebytes a go, and check the forums you said as well. Cheers!

You know what I'm talking about.
Seriously though: Delete cookies, clear cache, try running spybot. Probably just something your browser looked at.
Thank you, Rubacava!
For Firefox, there's an Add-On that gets rid of all advertisements on a webpage. It's called AdBlock and it works wonders.
