Getting rid of a unibrow

edited May 2009 in Help / Advice Forum
I have a bit of a unibrow. It's really hard to get a regular razor there because of the shape of the area. My best luck so far has been using a nose hair trimmer, but even that doesn't work very well. I don't want to pluck it, because I'm a wuss.

I'm not sure why now, at age 27, I suddenly care about it, but I wouldn't mind some advice on not looking like Frida Kahlo.

Get over it and pluck. Shaving it will just make it look thicker when it comes back.

Plucking the unibrow area isn't nearly as painful as plucking the actual eyebrow area, or plucking facial hair, or plucking earhair, or...

actually (maybe it's just b/c i'm used to it), I can't think of a place I'd rather pluck than the unibrow zone. The satisfaction outweighs the very low level of pain.

You want uncomfortable plucking? Accidentally rip out a nose hair when you're trimming. Now that sucks. Eyebrow plucking is not bad at all.

If you can't pluck out eye brows or uni brow hair than you are a sissy. Although I do sometimes pull out my nosehairs if they are bothering me. Seriously though just pluck them, it really does not hurt at all.

Get an at home wax kit, and fucking wax that sucker. Less tedious than plucking, and it hurts less. Believe me, I have experience in this area (though I hate to admit it). I'm armenian. Armenians are hairy mother fuckers.

They make eyebrow razors in pretty colors! They sell them at beauty supply stores normally up at the front near the register. They cost around $1 here in Philadelphia, and I can't see them costing that much more elsewhere.

You might want to avoid using a razor, as it'll speed up the process of the unibrow to get thicker and darker. Plucking can be a pain at first but, you'll get use to it. Or, you can always get electrolosys (sp?) done.

Myth: Hair grows back thicker and darker after it has been shaven.

Facts: This is simply not true, says Robin Ashinoff, M.D., director of Dermatologic, Mohs and Laser Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J. “It only appears that hair is thicker after cutting because the proximal shaft [the part of the hair closest to the skin] is thicker in diameter,” she says. A strand of hair naturally tapers toward the end.

Paradi Mirmirani, M.D., a dermatologist at the Permanente Medical Group in Vallejo, Calif., adds, “Once it has been shaven, the hair will regrow with a blunt tip, which creates a more stubbly and rough feeling.”

Nor will hair grow back darker after shaving, Mirmirani says. Shaving changes the hair shaft, which grows outside the skin, but doesn’t change the hair follicle, which determines the hair’s length, girth and color, she says.

I usually just shave it. I haven't got a bad mono though...

Yeah, the hair doesn't grow back thicker/darker, but the blunt shaved tip does make it more noticeable faster. Plus if you pluck it right, you'll get the root out with it, and it'll take even longer to come back.

Just get one of those 15$ electric trimmers from Wal Mart. You'd have to go out of your way to cut yourself with one of those things. Turn on, brzzt, done.

Many women with particularly fuzzy eyebrows will wax. People of both genders will pluck. I have about 10-15 hairs that eventually grow in as a sort of unibrow, and I pluck them. The trick to making it not painful is to be fast -- actually "pluck" the hairs, don't just grab them and then slowly pull them out of your face.

Pluck in the direction of growth too. They'll get thinner and weaker over time, so just keep at it.

Have someone else pluck it. Or tilt the razor at an angle and shave carefully.

It's true. It will look thicker because instead of the tapered tip at the end you've got the blunt middle of the hair poking out.

The misconception people have is that it actually grows back thicker, which has been proven to not be the case.

Honestly, so many of you blokes are wusses! get a waxing kit - Bliss sell one on their web site, its really easy to use, lasts for ages and ages (the product as wel as the hair free zone), once you've been waxing for a while, it doesn't really hurt, its just like pulling a plaster/bandaid off.

I use a mach fusion so it has the little single blade on the other side which makes occasionally shaving mine quite easy.

I was just about to come in and say the exact same thing. Mine sometimes is pretty thick, so every other day is what I would suggest. I shave every day though, so shaving a square half inch is really not a problem every other day.

Plucked. I just steamed it with a hot rag and let my wife do it. It didn't hurt at all.

Plucking or waxing are definitely superior options to shaving. I pluck my eyebrows, but that's just because it's less of a hassle to me than waxing them. Also, at this point, waxing would be a little pointless, because it's mostly just touching up now (I've been pluckin' them for a few years). I kinda feel like plucking also gives a bit more control.

Just shave it. It's not hard at all with a one or two blade razor. You shouldn't even need shaving cream, just use warm water and do it once or twice a week.

If you don't want to mess with it ever again, why not have an electrolyte hair removal?
It's gonna be a little painful and annoying one time, but then you don't have to deal with it anymore.

Just go get it waxed. It takes less than 5 minutes and is less than 10 bucks to do it. And you won't have to go back for many weeks.

Listen to the women, she knows what she's talking about. I get my unibrow waxed when I get my haircut every 2 or 3 months. By the time I go in for the haircut it's just starting to show through.

i dont have much of a unibrow, but i shave that area whenever i shave. i use an electric razor because im a huge sissy, but when i put it on my brow it doesn't shave either side of my eyes brows cause im only pressing into the centre of my forehead, also you can just turn the razor on its side it on its side.

You should be able to find a personal grooming device with 3 interchangeable heads which will allow you to trim your eyebrows/nose/ears.

One of these heads should be a mini trimmer which is perfect for dealing with any hair between your brows.

I can't find mine online but you are looking for something like the thing on the right.

electrolysis or laser hair removal might be your best option, if you've got some cash to spare. i think it's about 60$ per treatment, every 3 - 6 months, for 5 treatments. after that, the hair will not come back and you will never have to pluck/wax/shave ever again.

I just do it every time I shave. An extra smudge of shaving foam and half a second with the razor. No fuss at all.

It's just one of the many extra areas I've learned to shave over the years.
