Volume maxnanigans

I just recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows, and this bug is a first: whenever I skip forward or backward along the track of a video file in Media Player Classic (Windows Media Player as well), it maxes out my computer's volume.
Anybody ever heard about something like this before or have any suggestions on what it could be? It's a pain in the ass but I'm also too lazy to go through another Windows installation, so I'd rather just try and get this fixed.
I'm not actually expecting a solution, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask in the hopes that someone's gone through this before. Or that someone here is omniscient. Whatever comes first.
Does the volume slider in windows actually move from its previous position when you do this? Or is it just the speakers cranking.
If you have Altec Lansing PC speakers, they seem to be notorious for randomly cranking to max volume at random times. Mine do it because apparently World of Warcraft sounds generate the natural resonance frequency of the volume knob or something.
As a matter of fact, I was at Target a few weeks ago and the demo speakers for Altec Lansing there did the same exact max volume thing.
So. If you have AL speakers, it may be them, not your software.

The volume slider stays in place, it's just the speakers cranking. But they're not AL, and it only happens when my output audio is using the Audigy 2 card and not the onboard sound.
See, I just installed a new WinXP Pro CD with SP1 and SP2 slipstreamed onto the disc to get around WGA. I think this different version combined with a very old divx codec I installed has something to do with it, especially after I found this. Except now I can't figure out how to uninstall the stupid codec. It's not in the list.
I'll probably just reinstall Windows again tomorrow and work things out one at a time from there.
