I was just playing assassin's creed on my PC when I started getting a lot of graphics errors and I can't exactly remember but it was enough to make me alt tab out and bring up my hardware monitors. I've been using EVGA precision to control my EVGA Geforece 8600GT for a while with no problems. When I opened it up it showed my GPU running in the high 60s and my fan speed was changing erratically in the low 30%s. Before this I had it manually set to about 80% and have never seen it fluctuate before. Now that I've shut the game off and am trying to let things cool down the fan it running at it's standard 30% mark but I can't change the speed anymore using the EVGA fan control.
I'm just not entirely sure what the hell just happened or if anything was damaged and if it's permanent.
It's a long shot, but had the fan been making any odd, different sounds? Fans tend to make quite a noise before they finally bite it (bearings wearing out, I assume).
I use two of the EVGA 8800GTs, and their fans make a distinctive noise. I think you'd be able to notice a change in the sound, especially if you'd opened the case before.
It looks like it's still spinning... Is it possible my fan controller just went crazy for a while there?
Also, I'm glad I opened it up to check, because it's clearly time to clean in here
@synthesis: I think part of the reason I checked everything was because when i have the fan running for performance it makes a noticable sound and it just cut out in the middle of the game during those video glitches.
I'm guessing it's not broken but it freaked me out for a while and it's just weird i guess
