I'm curious to see what Wii sales are like.

I mean, I'm sure it's still the best-selling system and all, but it's just been so weird lately seeing stores absolutely fully-stocked with Wiis every time I go in. Wal-Mart has them crammed into every orifice of their glass cases, like they're running out of room for the spare Wiis or something.

Yup, it's going to be interesting to see if there is a drop-off and, if so, how much it is. Will it be similar to what the 360 and PS3 reached several years ago? :)

Will it be enough to inspire Nintendo to drop the price to maintain a level of sales? (doubtful)

I can understand some drop-off. I mean, we're 3 years into this generation. People have a system that they want, the shine is gone. Now it's pretty much hitting the "maintain" level until prices start dropping again (if that even helps anymore).

what the wii needs is viable software that isn't a year old.

I wish madworld had sold better...

as it stands, the only AAA high profile game that is expected to release this year is monster hunter 3. Sure, there'll be some other good games to pick up along the way, but nintendo needs something to reignite excitement in the masses.

we're on the road to E3 though. this year will either be very interesting or a total let down (and I'm not speaking strictly in regards to nintendo here either).

The thing is, AAA to us is not AAA to the masses. I don't think any of us would have expected to see WiiFit dominating the charts for as long as it has. Or seeing Nintendo hiring celebrities to show off Brain Age, Rhythm Heaven, or Cooking Trainer. Nintendo could release something that just takes off without us expecting it.

But for us I guess, yes, I would love to see another high profile release (ie: Zelda, Pikmin 3, or something of such sort).

*shrugs* you're right, it might not even hit this year. but i thought citing MH3 was better than talking about DQX, a game we have absolutely no info on.

Im surprised on how many games support the balance board well outside of Wii Fit. This must have gotten other people less interested on the Wii Fit game but after the balance board.

Where are you seeing news of this? I don't see any bankruptcy notices on the news sites.

Also, I'm sure the DSi didn't sell a whole lot at all. It seems very much like a "gimmick" release that can do a few neat things but nothing worth buying another DS over if you have one already. I'm anticipating a DS2 being shown at E3 this year.

    From NIntendo NPD press release:
In its first week, Nintendo DSi sold 435,000 in the United States. After the same amount of time on the U.S. market after its launch, Nintendo DS Lite had sold 226,300 systems.

DSi sold just under twice as much in its first week as the Lite sold in its first week.

For the DS, EEDAR has it as "expected to post year-over-year growth above 129%" The DS sold 414.8K in April 2008 so it should be around 900k or so.

Nintendo DS sold over 500k last month, not including DSi, which pulled an additional 435k in a week right after that.

To make a conservative projection, if the DSi sells a meager 100k for the rest of the month (on top if its first week), and the Lites sells a meager 100k for the month, that's still 635k.

~800k is a reasonable estimate for DS sales for April. 900k is within reach too.

80k in a week would be asking for a lot, even from Persona; that said, I imagine it'll do about 80-90k lifetime, between new folks who got on the train on P3 and people who are re-purchasing a version of the game that isn't butchered.

Maybe. I'm just going by what their NPD release said:
Wii tallied sales of nearly 601,000 in March, while Nintendo DS sold more than half a million, even in advance of the April 5 launch of the new Nintendo DSiâ„¢ system.

Pricey new technology not doing well in an economic slump?

    Let's debate!!!

You can get a Blu-Ray player for less than a Wii.

    Totally not relevant.

The Blu-rays themselves are still damn pricey, as DVDs get cheaper and cheaper.
Seriously, $30+ for both Wall-E and Nightmare Before Christmas.

Sadly I agree with both of you that it's the media prices that make B-R unappealing.

Still I was shocked to see that stand alone BR player sales were lower than PS3 sales for the first quarter of this year. I mean the PS3 is twice as expensive.

I've got no qualms buying a new release movie on Blu Ray. Generally they are discounted and sell for the same price, or a few dollars more, than the DVD here in Australia the week of release. The expensive part is replacing older DVD's with Blu Rays, because they treat old movies as new releases (which is normal anyway) price wise. Like, if I see a new movie on Blu Ray for $32au and the DVD for $27au (a common occurance lately) I'm not going to buy the DVD to save $5.

Also, I'm sure the DSi didn't sell a whole lot at all. It seems very much like a "gimmick" release that can do a few neat things but nothing worth buying another DS over if you have one already. I'm anticipating a DS2 being shown at E3 this year.
There is no chance in hell they are announcing a DS2 at E3 this year.
Seriously. The DS is the most successful thing in the history of forever, Nintendo just released a new iteration of it a few weeks ago, and Nintendo has a history of long handheld lifespans.

The DS was released in, what, 2005? I wouldn't expect even a whisper of a new Nintendo handheld until 2011.

Yeah but they need to get the word out more, or word of mouth needs to happen more quickly.

When I mention Blu-ray to people, the response is usually "Whoa aren't those players like $500?"

Depends on where you shop. I've only paid more than $20 for maybe five of my 60+ titles, and I only paid $42 shipped for Firefly (less than I paid for the DVD set).

Why not? An announcement now would mean that we'd probably get the DS2 in late 2010. I mean, it's not really like a hardware revision before a new system is all that radical an idea; the GBA SP dropped in 2003, then the DS in 2004.

Remember: the DS is turning five years old this November. Certain larger dev houses, especially Square-Enix, are just hitting the absolute limits of what the hardware can do and are obviously straining for more. There has got to be a lot of pressure to put out a new version that's backward-compatible with the old hardware. Sure Nintendo doesn't do huge horsepower these days, but certainly they can put together a much stronger machine for $150 than what's on sale currently. The DS is hitting saturation in Japan at this point and sales are slowing monthly; there may be a spike of curious people getting the DSi, but at the end of the day, people who want the system have the system at this point. It is time to seriously consider what will replace a half-decade old piece of hardware, and if they don't announce the DS2 at this conference, they're at least going to allude to it.

Also seriously, does anyone have a link or something on this XSeed "out of money" thing, I can't find anything about it, anywhere. It got mentioned last thread and it's bugging me.

It's also still selling amazingly well, a new model just came out, and there is absolutely no reason for them to upgrade. I don't really see where you're getting you're info, because from what I hear, the DSi is doing excellently

Because history shows us the opposite. The gameboy line (GB, GBP, GBC) went on for 12 years, against technologically vastly superior handhelds, and still won it. They have no reason to announce a new system, especially when sony obviously isn't if the PSP Go! Rumors turn out to be true. And nintendo tends to be conservative in that regard.
