Cyanide, an independent French studio made up of former Ubisoft employees who got some recent attention for working on the new Blood Bowl game, have managed to get their mitts on exclusive rights for creating PC and console games set in the ASOIAF universe.
According to their press release, they're collaborating with Martin (OLOL GET MORE HOBBIES YOU FAT FUCK) and a game is already in development.
That's pretty much all the info right now. There are a few "We're honoured to be working with Mr. Martin, etc." quotes in the press release, but nothing about what the games will be. Although, they're promising twists that will keep even series fans interested, so who knows what they're aiming for.
Anyway, who wants to see what? I know ASOIAF has been turned into a
Risk-like board game, and there's a pnp RPG as well. Cyanide has made a lot of sports sims, so maybe they'd start with some sort of turn-based strategy game or something along the lines of the
Total War series, which would be decent enough, but probably won't have anything besides the license to sell it.
Jamie Lannister, the Early Years? Some sort of RPG reworking of the books?
One thing's for sure: If they release the
Joffrey Killing Simulator, I will buy 4 copies.
Press release.

A Song of Ice and Fire: Tournament Fighters
You could pit Jaime Lannister vs. Bronn
Rob Stark vs. Loras Tyrell
Arthur Dayne vs Barristan the Bold
Probably even better. It's a vivisection simulator. You get to cut open a pregnant cat.
I will reserve judgment until it is clear that these games don't shit all over the rich tapestry they've been given.
Ha.
Ahahahahahhahaha.

No, ideally, it would be a modern Crusader Kings.
I would like to be able to play as every little miniscule lord on Westeros.
I don't know, the only Romance of the Three Kingdoms I've played was the latest, which, I assume, is missing a lot of the political stuff.
Crusader Kings, though, especially with the expansion, can delve very, very deeply into politics and allows the player to scheme, come up with elaborate plots, and backstab their neighbors, sometimes literally.
It would seem to be perfect considering the nature of the books, especially the earlier ones.
Fixed that for you.
I'm gleeful at the thought of ASoIF game, but I fear a strategic one, a la Total War, is the only way to go. As much as I'd love to get down and dirty in an RPG--and believe me, I would--I'm afraid an Elder Scrolls type just couldn't do it justice.
Will you have rough forced medieval sex with...
...your wife?
...your twin sister?
...your other sister?
...your wife's sister?
...the nearest village?
Now that's replayability.
I think that if done correctly, then a Mass Effect/Elder Scrolls type game could be very good.
I can't wait to see how hard the gaming industry gets fucked over after angry moms ignorantly buy a game rated Adults Only that includes rape, torture, and ludicrously graphic violence for their ten year old kids.
I mean seriously what the fuck are they going to do. Every chapter in George RR Martin has someone getting cut up like a bitch, set on fire, raped, or otherwise dealt with in a manner not in accordance with How To Win Friends and Influence People. I don't want to play a rape simulator, tyvm.
Yes, this is quite obviously what the game will be like.
They cannot do anything else with it or tone anything down.
What game setting will that be, then? A gentle melody of cold and heat? Not every IP can support a game. Hopefully these guys bought the rights for pennies to keep them wrapped up, and are going to pull a surprise reveal.
edit: scratch that, i'd rather see it done like a Bioware RPG. But that is too much to ask.
He's going to pull a Robert Jordan and die on the shitter. Some author is going to come along and read the manuscript and say what the fuck was this retard thinking? and rewrite it into a semi-coherent bookend.
Which the studio will split into three parts.
And we're all going to buy it.
Burn in hell, Robert Jordan.
I'm going to finish it, and you can rest assured that cyborgs and tentacle rape will find their way into Westeros.
But seriously: Total War style game? With Politics? (Well, more like: RPG-style politics... with dialogues and stuff). I've dreamed of this shit.
Now what would be great is if they made a Total War sort of set of scenarios. Okay, heres your units, all set up, Go to war! And then all the fluff can be done through cutscenes in between.
And then it would turn out like Warhammer: Mark of Chaos because no one but Creative Assembly seems to be able to reproduce the fun of Total War combat because there's always something wrong about it.
Not every IP can support a game, but developers will be damned if they don't try to shoehorn in something.
See: Dante's Inferno.
ASOIAF sure doesn't need a game, and I don't see a story-driven one ever working out well, but the setting is an obvious choice for fantasy battles. I'm just interested in how they're going to actually apply the license in any meaningful way.

You're right, I'm totally wrong. I remember in Dante Alighieri's original poem when Dante killed Death, took his scythe, and carved a gore-spattered road through the Nine Circles in an action-packed adventure.

See that right there?
Make a electronic version of it (with the expansions as DLC if you must), and I'm there day one.
