How loud should my 360 be?

I just bought the console about a week ago, and I was immediately surprised at how loud it is while reading discs. When I'm not playing a game off of a disc, it is totally silent, for obvious reasons.

It is so loud that I resort to installing most of my games, and for those that I do not have installed I crank up my surround sound so that it drowns it out. It's not just the "WRRRZZ" sound that it makes every couple seconds while reading the discs, it's the extraordinarily loud fan.

I've looked around on the net and other people have said the 360 is just a loud console, but I don't remember it being this loud while playing at friends/family's houses. I've got the console standing vertically on a very sturdy, solid wood entertainment centre. There is several inches of space on all sides.

So, is this normal? I would compare it to one of those stand-up fans on super high speed -- loud that you can hear it over the sound of the games.

If it matters what games I'm playing, they include GTA IV, Fable 2, PGR 4, Banjo and Kazooie N&B, Viva Pinata TiP, and Lego Star Wars TCS. They are ALL equally loud.

At this point I can simply bring the console back and exchange it without a problem, but I don't want to do that and discover I'm just nitpicky and this is normal for the 360.

I managed to quiet mine down slightly by placing it on a mouse pad - some of the noise was the rattle of the box on the hard floor. But it's still loud as fuck.

your console is normal. I solved the issue by putting the 360 in a separate room and running cables through the wall. In another room with the door closed I never have to bother hearing that beast again. Only downfall is I can no longer use the DVD remote and have no desire to set up some kind of IR repeater. The controller works fine enough for DVD viewing.

What? Really? You put the console in a separate damn room?

Why did I never notice this god awful sound while playing other peoples' 360s?

This one is the jasper (is that the one that says 12v or whatever? It's a pretty recent manufacture date on the back) so would that be the reason for it being so loud?

This is what mine sounds like. It's some other dude's video, but it's exact.

I have a jasper and its pretty noisy when installing discs also. I just got used to it after a while, its kind of annoying though for the few games that can't go on the harddrive, such as crackdown.

So what's the consensus on putting this thing horizontal and inside my enclosed entertainment centre instead? It would be behind a glass door on a shelf maybe 3 feet wide, 8 inches high, and 2 feet deep. Is that basically asking for it to overheat and red ring?

You're asking for it. Make sure this thing get plenty of fresh cool air available to it.

Having a 360 is kind of like having a dog. You feed it (discs), make sure it gets plenty of exercise (fresh cool air), and not to cage it for too long (overheating in an enclosed entertainment center). When it dies (red ring), you get another one from the breeder (Microsoft) if it was before its time, or you go out and buy another one from a pet store (your local electronics store). Sometimes people rescue (buy off of eBay), but you never really know what you're getting and it might come with a whole host of problems.
