Trifecta complete. PS3 on the way. Educate me?

OK, so I own a Wii and a 360.

I finally just ordered my PS3 from Sonystyle.ca after a LONG journey of collecting Sony Style points with my MasterCard. Should arrive in a week or so...

I haven't followed much news in the world of PS3. I have recently done some research though. Things I know:
  • Little Big Planet
  • MGS4
  • PixelJunk monsters
  • Flower
  • Everyday shooter
  • FF XIII
  • Protein folding

...are all things I am quite interested in. What else should I be aware of? Tips/Tricks? Stuff to avoid?

I currently have a Sony Ericsson k790a cell phone with bluetooth. Can I use it as a BD remote? Once I get an iPhone, can I use that?

My TV does 720p/1080i. Which is better (I know that argument is bigger than us).

I know there is lots of info to be found by Googling, and I have done some research, but I would like first-hand knowledge from strangers I trust.

What else should I know?

Thanks!

    -Stick with 720p
-PS3 supports bluetooth, but I'm not sure about using your phone as a remote
-Very much Valkyria Chronicles. Very much.
-If you like SRPGs and the first 2 games, pick up Disgaea 3.

    Get Uncharted
    Yes to Valkyria Chronicles
Get Planet Earth on Blu-ray (it is the most beautiful 9 hours of documentary that you'll ever see)
You can swap the hard drive out for any 2.5" drive if you feel you need a bigger one
Check out Ratchet & Clank Future and Folklore. If you feel like importing, check out Hakuna Matata and Aquanaut's Holiday.

Siren: Blood Curse. Survival horror from the creators of the original Silent Hill. But more than that, it's survival horror + stealth gameplay. Which, as nerds, we all know = win. Is it still only $30.00 on PSN, or was that a one-week deal? If not, I suggest the Asian disc release. More expensive, but it comes with a box and a disc.

    Valkyria Chronicles
. It's been mentioned, but it hasn't been mentioned enough.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Ignore that Shia LeBeouf abortion - this is Indiana Jones IV. Annnd what else?

Killzone 2 is the peak of competitive shooters on the PS3.

Insomniac's offerings are uniformly good. Resistance 1 is good, Ratchet & Clank Future is very good, and I haven't tried R2 yet. Oooh, I know!

inFAMOUS - the demo drops next Thursday, and the game comes out the following Tuesday. Made by the Sly Cooper team (Sucker Punch), it took me a long, long time to get on board with this one - but now I can't bloody wait.

Edit: if you're up for importing, I've heard good things about Afrika, renamed to Hakuna Matata, which we refuse to endorse around here. And, I've heard nothing but very, very high praise for Demon's Souls.

Just like Siren, both of these games have an Asian version with full English support. I suggest play-asia.com for your importing needs, they got my copy of Siren out to me in fourteen days flat with the cheapest shipping option.

I ended up renting R2. I loved R1 but the single player on R2 just aggrivated the hell out of me. I like to muliplayer it up every now and then and this game has a GREAT multiplayer. The single player I gave up on after the 100th time of all mobs in an area disengaging my worthless teamates and all proceeding to run directly at me. There has to be a middle ground between AI against AI making the game too easy and smear the human player.

Fuck yes, Planet Earth on Blu-ray. That is a MUST for all Playstation 3 owners. And I'm also going to second Hakuna Matata (it's called Afrika in Japan, but that version does not have the English localization) and Demon's Souls, Demon's Souls especially. Since the Playstation 3 has no region protection, and those two games are COMPLETELY in English - even the vocalization for Demon's Souls - you'll be able to easily play them.

So, I've heard that the American version has the voice over done by Sigourney Weaver rather than David Attenborough. To me that's really weird, David Attenborough has been doing that kind of thing for years and he really does know his stuff. Whereas the American version got some famous actress to do it, doesn't the US have any kind of well known/respected person equivalent to David Attenborough?

It is different if you import it. iirc it either has more stuff, does 1080P as opposed to 1080i, or both. I'll check on blu-ray.com and see if I can find someone describing the differences but I know it's related to these two.

Sigourney did a respectable job, but Attenborough, man. If the BBC version was an extra $100 or something, you'd be quite happy with Discovery, but as was said, they're about the same price.

Am I better off setting it to 720p? Honestly, I've never really minded upscaling (I guess I don't have quite the discriminating eye, or sit too far from my TV to immediately tell), so I guess it wouldn't matter either way?

    AFAIK:

The Discovery Channel version is edited, 1080i and supposedly has visual glitches. Avoid it.

The BBC version released in the US is full-length, 1080p, and can be bought pretty much anywhere.

Since then, there's been a new BBC version released in the UK with a 5th bonus disc with two 1080i episodes not in the original BBC release(s). This version is the only one you can only get as an import.

Progressive is always better than interlaced, which is why people say if your tv can only do 720p or 1080i that you set it to 720p. If your tv can do 1080p than set it to 1080p. However, keep in mind some games only do a max of 720p, which means if you have your console / tv setup for 1080p it will upscale to that resolution for that game. Games that are setup to do 1080p however, will then run at the native 1080p resolution without upscale.

360 games will say on the back of the box what resolutions they run on. I'm not sure about PS3 games.

Agreed, Trine looks pretty damn awesome. One thing we should be mentioning when we list off awesomeness - demos! Just looking at my post above...

-Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has a demo. It gives you an idea of the combat gameplay, but tbh? I fucking hated the game based on that demo. Eventually I rented Uncharted, and the presentation of the whole game turned me into a believer, and I pronounced it "buyable." A few months later I picked up a used copy at a pawn shop for $40, and eventually beat the game on Crushing - at which point I was prepared to call it a masterpiece. Try the demo, but at least give this one a rental. I feel horrible now about buying a used copy. It's worth $60 - Naughty Dog deserves my $60.

-Siren: Blood Curse has a demo, but it does a terrible job of showcasing what makes Siren special. It shows you the bare-bones of sneaking, and then shows off some of the game's context-sensitive kill animations. It doesn't let you know that Siren is a seriously intelligently-designed game.

Edit: what the hell. If you like survival horror? Here's my Siren review.

-Valkyria Chronicles has a demo. Prior to the demo, I was so committed to purchasing BioShock last fall, I read Atlas Shrugged cover-to-cover over the summer. The demo bumped BioShock to my "when I get to it" list.

-Ratchet & Clank Future also has a demo. I can't tell you anything about said demo, because I never tried it. I love these games enough to buy them no questions asked.

-Wipeout HD, Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword all have demos.

I too recently (last week) got a PS3 after selling my Wii, and have gone on a little spending spree getting MGS4, Valkyria Chronicles, and Killzone 2, all of which are great. (I'm especially surprised with the latter: I mostly got Killzone 2 just as a graphical showcase to see what the PS3 can do given all of this "prettiest game ever" talk, but I'm finding the actual gameplay to be right up there with the best as well, Dual Shock analog sticks aside.

Edit: I hated the Uncharted demo, though. I'll probably still give it a try since everyone seems to love it, but man is that demo a testament to the fact that not every game should have a demo. It was so, so shitty.

As someone who also just recently got a PS3, Killzone realy is impresive. However I felt like the multiplayer was sorely lacking from the splitscreen goodness (a major sellingpoint for me)

I'm pretty sure that's scaling resolution. Most games only display in 720p. Some will display in higher resolutions, but they put the lower resolutions on there for general information. Every PS3 game I have that displays higher than 720p will have every resolution is can display in printed on the box. I guess they want to cut down on the general lack of knowledge of HDTV's in the general population. 'Oh man, I bought a 1080p TV, look at all these games that only display on a 720p TV! Guess I won't buy any of them then'.

Even if you have it on the 360

Why? Well that leads me to my OTHER PS3 recommendation...

The greatest fighting game controller of all time is PS3 compatible. Ebay has a steady flow of them. This is one of the BEST features of the PS3 - practically any USB controller will work with the system.

Believe me. I've played with a SFIV 360 pad. The Saturn pad is miles better. It'll help you defeat Shenlong to stand a chance.

Every single game on the Xbox 360, for quite some time now, runs at 1080p.....upscaled. Only a small number of them run at it natively.

It's the same case of the PS3--games can scale to it, and they make note of it, but they're doing it through upscale.

I really can't tell. I'd just be happy if more games had anti-aliasing.

    Street Fighter IV

Even if you have it on the 360

Why? Well that leads me to my OTHER PS3 recommendation...

    saturn_usb_pad_shop.jpg

The greatest fighting game controller of all time is PS3 compatible. Ebay has a steady flow of them. This is one of the BEST features of the PS3 - practically any USB controller will work with the system.

Believe me. I've played with a SFIV 360 pad. The Saturn pad is miles better. It'll help you defeat Shenlong to stand a chance.

Funny. I just got a Refurbished 60g PS3 (hardware back-compat woo!) two weeks ago, completing my own Trifecta. I haven't gotten to dig too deep into the library yet, but...

UNCHARTED. Buy it, love it. Nathan Drake is the love child of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones; you will be in awe of his smarmy, bar-brawling, tomb-raiding, shirt-half-tucking AWESOMENESS. I had to force myself to put it down last night and go to bed.

Rachet and Clank Future: Weapons of Destruction. I never played any of the other installments of this franchise; it just never caught my eye. Grabbed the demo of this off PSN, bought it the next day. Good, clean fun here.

Little Big Planet. Just buy it. It's a pretty decent platformer, awesome presentation, and very easy to use level-creation tools.

Don't forget you can grab demos off the PSN; the first weekend, I set up RemotePlay over the Internet, then spent all day at work Monday using my PSP to download and install demos onto the PS3. There's a Valkyria demo up there; I highly recommend you try it out, because I thought it was horrible. I see the praise it gets around here, but I don't see it; just my opinion. Yahtzee did a review of it last week, if you're interested.

I would recommend "Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds" to anyone even remotely interested in a golf game. Hell, even if you're not you may like this.

I would recommend "PAIN" and all of it's add-ons to anyone even remotely interested in a drinking/party hot-seat game. After your 6th or 7th shot of Jaeger you will realize that this game is pure genius.

I also like "High-Velocity Bowling", but if you already have 2 other systems this might be overkill.

Oh, and there is this other game... "Valkyria Chronicles" I think there is a post somewhere, buried in this board, where a few people thought it was ok....

I dunno.. if you're going to put money down for a controller for fighting games you may as well just get a stick. And if you're going to be playing them online you should go with the system that has more people playing online (360). The only problem is that it's really hard to find a 360 stick right now.

Thanks for all the info! Keep it coming.

I will look in to Valkyria Chronicles...

Oh, also Trine really interests me. Can't wait to get all up in this console.

Make sure it's a game for you. It suffers from a lot of fanboyism on this forum. I bought it and played it. It's a fine game but it's not the end all they want you to believe, there are some serious negatives with the game. There are also some really good things about it. Just make sure it's for you, don't trust the rabid people in the thread. If you want to know what negatives I'm talking about feel free to PM me.

I definitely recommend you look into all the PSN titles as it's one of the strengths of the system I believe. There are some really really fantastic games on there.

Afrika is a great game if you like taking photos.

Zen Pinball is awesome if you like pinball games.

Everyone else has covered most everything. I will say Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm is awesome and fucking gorgeous if you're into the manga/anime. No online, but if you like the series you'll dig it.

What's the thoughts on Prototype and inFamous? I put down a pre-order on inFamous, because I'm a sucker for lighting powers, but how about Prototype? Looks to be a similar game, but with a darker/organic thing going on.
