NHL 10 - Want to join the league? PM Redfield by Thursday.
A thread for the Penny Arcade [strike]Red Wangs[/strike] Hotsteppers and Hotsteppers League, the official team and league of the Penny Arcade forums in NHL 10.
Important Unlock Boost Notice
Some of the unlockable equipment and boosts require you to complete a game with every team in a certain league. However, they must be unlocked in a specific order. If you do the leagues in the order below it will be ok, but if you unlock something for a league lower on the list you will not be able to go back and unlock any of the ones above it. So for example if you do the Finnish league unlock first you cannot unlock any of the things for the other leagues except the Swedish.
Czech
AHL
NHL
German
Swiss
Finnish
Swedish
This problem will be fixed in the title update, and when it is fixed all of the unlocks that have been completed will be awarded immediately once a single game using any team has been completed.
per Wikipedia
NHL 10 will be the 19th video game in the NHL series released by EA Sports.
New features
The only information available so far comes from EA Sports' promotional material, which states:
"NHL 10 will introduce over 200 game refinements and will bring the real emotions from fans and a real hockey atmosphere into the game.
First person fighting will be introduced in the game to make the player feel like he's really in an NHL fight. An all-new board physics engine will let the players battle for pucks on the boards letting the player shield, kick the puck, pin opponents to the glass, all while the fans bang on the glass just like in real life. Player fatigue will have players bobble passes and avoid collisions under threat of constant physical pressure. Momentum will enter the game like never before. Players will be able to start scrums after the whistle to draw penalties and to bring the fans even more into the game for that extra push of momentum needed to win. New scoring techniques will be entering the game such as scoring from your knees and hitting the puck from mid air. Players will also be able to pass the puck off the boards.
New fan textures will make the fans look more realistic. Playoff towelswill also be in the game."
Producer David Littman also confirmed in his Producer Blog that the PS3 version will now include Customisable Music

League Info:
All of the settings from season 1 will remain intact. Each team will play each other twice. I will look to see if I can somehow change the shootout in the playoffs garbage. If not, practice your shootouts.

"And to all of you new guys (and a reminder for you season 1 vets), if you don't play for like 2 weeks straight, you are booted. We had people that went for like a month or more without playing their games and they eventually saw the boot. I will put this in the OP to have something to fall back on once I boot one of yous. " -Redfield85, the commish
Troubleshooting:
If you and your opponent can't get a game started (freezes at loading screen, can't accept invite, boots you at start of game), try these:
1. Clear your cache ("How to" link)
2. Install the game to your HD.
3. Delete rosters and re-download them.
4. Keep starting a game with your opponent until it works. (This has worked for me plenty of times and others that eventually kept trying got it to work)
5. Unplug your router and connect directly to your modem.

Hotstepping: This is where we all are a team. We are the Hotsteppers. Games played here are played in the EASHL (EA Sports Hockey League). Each player plays as their own Be A Pro character and plays a certain position (C, LW, RW, LD, RD, G). If you do not have a full team on the ice, the other spots are controlled by the computer. You can play with a minimum two players. The main thing in this mode is that you must play your position. While you won't get yelled at by us, be courteous and try to play your best. Do not be a puck hog and you will be rewarded. Something you need to know about this mode is that you can't go three games without an opponent trying to use glitch goals. (This was true a few months after NHL 09 came out, so try to play a ton of EASHL in NHL 10 right when it comes out...before all glitch goals are found) You do get the occasional streak of fun games, but they are few and far between. Go ahead and sign up for the team if you are interested. Just hit the "Edit this page" text on the bottom right of the page and let us know on the forums that you signed up. Penny Arcade Hotsteppers Team Page
Online Team Play (OTP): If you find yourself playing Hotsteppers and people are glitching/not playing real hockey, jump on OTP (Online Team Play) and player lock. I have found OTP to be more enjoyable than EASHL due to the fact that everyone else that plays OTP seems to not try to cheat. You can play just two people in the lobby or you can play six-on-six. Player lock is not required (for unranked games), but highly suggested. Be sure to inform any Hotsteppers if you are jumping on to play OTP. Unranked OTP is basically EASHL, but you don't play as your personal Be A Pro. You play as NHL players (or whichever team you pick). A fun way to play is to play two-on-two and have one player on each team lock as the goalie while the second player on each team plays as the rest of the team (aka not position locked).
-Pass the puck. If you give, you shall receive. We are all here to have fun, not sit and watch you enter the offensive zone for the one hundredth time and get decked.
-Use the points at even strength and on the power play. They are usually never covered by the other team due to their lack of hockey knowledge.
-On the penalty kill, think defense first. If you are able to get a clear cut breakaway, congratulations. If not, throw the puck down the ice. While everyone uses the dump the puck button press (LB+up on right analog), I love just getting along the boards and shooting a nice snap shot down the ice. This makes the puck go slower down the ice and, if you can shoot it down without the opposing team getting to it, it will take more time off of their power play.
-Also, while on the penalty kill, try to stay in formation. A nice box is the most preferred way to defend the opposition. Yes, sometimes it doesn’t work or we get confused or the other team sucks so much that we can swarm them and take the puck, but it is good to have some sort of strategy.
-If you use any of the glitch goals (curve shot, continuous crease pass, continuous goal line dekeing, etc.), you will be booted from the team.
-A good way to create rebound goals is to shoot a hard wrist shot while aiming down+left/right (the side opposite of you on the ice). If you are waiting for the rebound, be patient.
-On the power play, take your time. We don’t have to score on the rush every single play. Set it up. Pass the puck around. You don’t have to always look for a one timer. Look for a screen. Use the points.
-You can hit players without the puck while they are in your zone in the invisible rectangle in front of your net. This is a great way to stop one timers.
-Do not go poke check/stick lift crazy. You will get a penalty. Pick and choose your spots. If you are trying to stop a one timer in front of the net, you can a)poke check, b)stick lift, c)check, d)stick on ice, e)hit "Y" to hold the opponent.
Play defense first. Don't pinch unless a forward is going to cover you. When going backwards, don't be suckered into trying to make a hit.
Stay in front of the net and use the Poke Check button while the opposition is taking a shot (there is a better chance you will block it).
Poke check when chasing a guy along the boards/around the net. Knocking the puck loose keeps them scrambling.
When deciding whether to chase an opponent around the net, just stay in front of the net and let him go around. It is better than being deked and allowing him to walk in front of the net for an easy goal.
Offensemen:
The biggest problem I have with them is cherry-picking and cycling. Pay attention when your teammate goes to the corner (in the offensive zone) for the puck. When they do, don't follow him. Assume he will get it and get into position to receive a pass.
Don't cherry-pick. Don't leave the defensive zone until the puck is going to be cleared. This doesn't mean that your Dman has the puck in the corner. Help him by being a person to pass to.
NHL 10 Photos: Please feel free to create a photo album on a picture website and throw up any EASHL or League photos. I put mine on Flickr (I believe $20/year for unlimited uploading). Just send me a PM with the link and I will toss it up here.
I think I am the only person who would replace Tim Thomas with Manny Fernandez while playing as goalie. Fernandez got me to the second round of the Hotstepper Season 2 playoffs. How could I not want to play as him?
I'm good to go sometime in the next half hour to hour?
Yeah... sorry about that. Mono makes me sleepy earlier. I'll be on a lot today playing UFC so when you want to play just message me. If I am not on, message me on here.
Even better, tell me when you will be on tonight and I can plan accordingly
ok mclay finally gave you Simon Gagne for Parise. but really your trade offers are the worst.
Giroux for Rupp? seriously dude? I wouldn't even let Rupp warm the bench on my team. I'll give you Giroux if you can find someway to get the real Rupp off the Devils.
how about Riley Cote for John Madden, Spezza, and Heatley?

I have a mancrush on Giroux. He is rated a 76 and Rupp is a 75. I'm not sure how that is a bad offer. LOL.
PS I still want Giroux.

I would go for the deal were he even a decent or amusing goon. Can you resurrect Probert for me? I'll only take him if you also trade me the cocaine to make him useful.
I really dislike Rupp, he is slow and has no skills other than fighting and I'd argue he isn't really good at that either.
make me a deal that isn't lopsided in your favor only and Giroux is yours. Last time I looked though you didn't have anybody on your squad that I'm interested in that wouldn't make the trade too favored on my end though. Rolston for Giroux is fair right? :P
It seems like we have lost a few people from this thread from previous seasons. Are there any of you that still visit the thread but don't post? I would love for everyone to post in here so we can have enough people for a game of 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 OTP every once in awhile.
I will be on a bit later tonight to play a few OTP games as goalie yet again. Just informing whoever now so you can debate whether you want to play or not.
Sorry about that Wiiild. I got sick again over the weekend and ended up being FAR too tired FAR earlier than I expected. I'm watching the finale of 24 right now on my PVR. About half way through. Wow. This whole season went downhill when Juma died after being in the Whitehouse for like, 20 minutes.
Anyone up for my EAISAWESOME games in like 40 minutes? Or possibly some Online UFC?
So, I just got this game, and I'm having some serious trouble scoring goals.
Specifically, what is the counter to my opponent putting 2-3 players in front of the net? They just camp there, and any shot that I hit tends to bounce right off.

Hotsteppers: The League: All-Star Game (NHL 09)

EASHL: Penny Arcade Hotsteppers
(And OTP)

Tips on becoming a better player
NHL 10 Photos: Please feel free to create a photo album on a picture website and throw up any EASHL or League photos. I put mine on Flickr (I believe $20/year for unlimited uploading). Just send me a PM with the link and I will toss it up here.

Yeah, the season finale tonight was pretty fucking bad ... and why someone just hasn't shot Kim Bauer in the face yet is beyond me
He is sleeping now. No soup for you.
He told me he will play tomorrow (well, play against you when he isn't playing UFC Undisputed 2009).
edit: I am playing a game or two of OTP if anyone wants in.

haha yes i do. thomas gives up such shitty rebounds and manny seems to play better online then thomas.
Yeah... sorry about that. Mono makes me sleepy earlier. I'll be on a lot today playing UFC so when you want to play just message me. If I am not on, message me on here.
Even better, tell me when you will be on tonight and I can plan accordingly
Anyone play last night? I didn't check while home. That question is especially for Remlap and Wiiildpiz, who both have a league-high 7 games left!

Giroux for Rupp? seriously dude? I wouldn't even let Rupp warm the bench on my team. I'll give you Giroux if you can find someway to get the real Rupp off the Devils.
how about Riley Cote for John Madden, Spezza, and Heatley?

XBOX
I'm good for about 45 mins.
I have a mancrush on Giroux. He is rated a 76 and Rupp is a 75. I'm not sure how that is a bad offer. LOL.
PS I still want Giroux.

Their ratings may be close to the same, but the appeal of that trade is incredibly low.

I will be on a bit later tonight to play a few OTP games as goalie yet again. Just informing whoever now so you can debate whether you want to play or not.

Specifically, what is the counter to my opponent putting 2-3 players in front of the net? They just camp there, and any shot that I hit tends to bounce right off.
Also, any general tips?
Crystal, are you playing Be A Pro or regularly (as the whole team)?
