Meeting locals online

Because of the way my personal life is at the moment, the best way for me to communicate with others is online and at random hours. I'd love to meet a few locals to talk to. I've tried craigslist and its so goddamned entertaining. Thank God I used a fake e-mail account for them to go to. Facebook doesn't seem too suited to meeting new people like this, and myspace also seems flooded with scams.
Can anyone suggest some other site for just finding locals to talk to?

OKCupid. It's nominally for dating but maybe half the people I've seen there don't use it for that.

    meetup.com

It's awesome. I moved to a new city where I didn't know anyone, and I checked out the site. I joined some groups, and are meeting a couple of cool people.

how did you meet people via craigslist? What groups/activities did you try out, just wondering. I've looked around and been tentative on ever trying any of that out as half the ads are spam. I've used the site to find local events and such (garage sales, fairs, classes...)

I saw one funny posting, but couldn't bring myself to respond. They were looking to start a ghost hunting group, but only for individuals who were "serious" and had their own equipment. I really just wanted to show up in a ghostbusters jump suit with awesome home made equipment.

There's a 'strictly platonic' section that worked pretty well when I first moved to Dallas. I never responded to ads, just made my own pretty much stating I was just looking for some nerdy friends to meet. Not all moved past a few back and forth emails, but even so, all it killed was time.
