Now on Virtual Console: TLOZ: Majora's Mask...ZOMG
Majora's Mask has, as of yesterday, been released for Nintendo's Virtual Console.
This is my favorite Zelda game. It took everything everyone loved about Ocarina and turned it on its side with more creativity than most franchises are capable of.
I've been playing all day and find myself loving it just as much as I did when I was but a young double digit.
"Oh hey, you trekked ALL the way across the overworld to the dungeon? Sorry, you're out of time, you'll have to go back to the hub world now. Sorry, try again."
Because of this I never got far past the first dungeon.

This is so wrong.
First, just play the song of time in reverse, it will slow down time considerable and will make things much easier, I NEVER felt any pressure from the clock. Second, the owl statues are around everywhere, it will make very easy to get to just about any place.
The game isn't exactly the most accesible in the franchise, although sometimes that makes it so much more rewarding. In its core Majora's Mask is not about time pressure and frustration, is about character interacion like no other game has ever done, all mixed with the quality gameplay you expect from a Zelda game in the form of its dungeons and awesome mechanics from the transformation masks. But the game truly shines with its sidequests which makes one of the most flesh-out worlds I've seen in gaming, this low poly models have felt more real for me than the ultra detailed citizens of jerusalem in Assasin's creed.
Majora's Mask is one of the most odd and bizzare games, not just for the Zelda series, but for gaming in general. It's the kind of game Nintendo will probably never make again, which is a shame. That alone should be a reason to try it for more than a couple of hours, but it happens to be also an excellent game if you give it the chance.
Oh yes I love this game, I'm going to buy it for the VC just because.

They sort of do. You keep the major items, but I was pretty sure the doors and such all reset whenever you did.
I wasn't fond of the time limit thing, mostly because I like taking things at my own pace, but I still really liked the game and I finished it with all the masks and such. I did have to buy a guide, however, because after I failed to beat the Water place in my first attempt I wasn't about to let it happen again.
EDIT: All that said, I'll probably be buying this since I don't have my N64 hooked up anymore.

Maybe you're right, but couldn't you use the major items to shot cut your way through the dungeons? I seem to remember having no issue with traveling back if i was in the middle of one.

Yeah if only there was some kind of owl statue shaped teleporter right outside every dungeon and major landmark in the game...
The last time I rented this game I got to the part where you had to wait for the moon to hit but not really in 30 minutes, then had to wait an hour or whatever for the event to start.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAGE.
Bought
The scarecrow in the shop in West Clock Town
He lets you essentially do the Song of Double Time
You'll have to wait a few more minutes, but there's a chest on top of the platform in South Clock Town and one in the Stock Pot Inn; grabbing those and cashing them into the bank'll keep you busy for a few minutes

And yeah, with the Inverted Song of Time you get in the neighborhood of an hour and a half to get something done. Hardly immensely constricting.
I only rented it back in the day, and I remember basically nothing of it.
