PDF's not loading on webpage, font problem?

I've been playing with a website created some time ago by a company long forgotten, trying to solve a problem. One of the pages displays a series of .pdfs in thumbnail form, which link to full-sized versions. When loading the page, I get an error message along the lines of "The content you are trying to open on this page is not functioning properly, please contact the person who created the pdf in order to correct the problem."

The weird thing is that only a certain series of pdf's, all created by the same old company, cause the problem. Any other pdf's used in that space work just fine. Additionally, those pdf's seem to display normally if you just play with them otherwise, outside the site.

Best guess so far is that the company added some sort of security feature that makes it so embedded text can't be copied. I'm pretty lost at this point, though, so suggestions are really welcome and appreciated.

What is this I don't even.

May have figured it out myself. I'm getting a "too few operands" error on the files, which google tells me means the files have been flagged incorrectly as ascii vs. binary. We've been fiddling with the files through a CMS, so I'm going to try ftping the files directly and changing the settings manually. Hopefully this works and I've created an H/A page for absolutely no reason at all.
