Help cleaning a PC virus (halfway done?)

Hello all:

I'm troubleshotting a co-worker's PC here at work (we have a small office, and since I know that CTRL-ALT-DEL opens the task manager, i'm light-years ahead of anyone else in terms of tech support - however, I have no training in tech support and am cetainly a layman - please provide any answers in 'plain english, dumbed-down' for me).

-She has a notebook system running WinXP SP3, fully updated.
-She was using AntiVir from Avira as her active anti-virus guard, and was behind a windows firewall.
-She downloaded a movie or two from a questionable website, executed them two days ago.
-Yesterday at boot-up, she noticed her AntiVir didn't start-up with the system.
-I noticed two suspicious processes in her task manager as well (new_drv.sys and 9129837.exe).
-Any attempt to start the AntiVir guard service was met with an instant error 1053 "the service didn't start in a timely fashion".
-I tried un-installing AntiVir, and re-installing, but near the end of the installation the system would immediately BSOD and reboot.
-I tried installing in safe mode, but again was met with a services error that said "can not start this service in safe mode".
-I tried installing AVG, Avast!, and COMODO - they all were disabled/killed at the process level.

-I then ran Avast!s boot-time virus scan, and ran Kaspersky's online virus scan. Both identified the following infected files:
PROQUOTA.exe
Dc1.exe
new_drv.sys
9129837.exe

-At least two of these seem to be the Infostealer.Rhaiyu virus, which is known to disable/inhibit antivirus function.

-I had Avast! delete these files during the boot-time scan.
-I then logged in again as administrator in safe mode, and searched for more instances of these files - found a few, deleted them.
-I then ran a program called CCcleaner, and deleted the associated entries for these programs from the msconfig start-up list.
-I rebooted into safe mode again, and ran CCcleaner's registry clean-up, and had it repair/delete 300 or so unused/bad registry keys.

-I then rebooted into safe mode w/ network ability, and ran the Kaspersky online scan - it was clean.

-I then rebooted normally, and ran Kaspersky again-clean.
-I then ran again the Avast! boot-time scan, it came back clean.

PROBLEM:
I still am unable to initialize ANY anti-virus active protection.
I can install AntiVir or Avast! for example, but just like before, they're killed at the process level from starting their active guards or scan functions.
My layman guess is that there still may be some residual registry keys from the infections that are hindering the antivirus programs?
The system is operating normally, is clean on all scans, but simply can't get any antivirus program processes running.

Please direct me on what to try next, what to do, or where else to ask for help.
Thanks so much for any advice you might be able to offer!

Download Malwarebytes anti-malware and install/run it in safe mode. If it won't install, rename the install to something else, and try again.

Could be on of the services associated with the antivirus is stop and isn't starting properly. You probably already know where it is at but if you right-click my computer and click manage then go under Services and Applications, then into Services you'll find a list of all the services and if they're set to automatic/manual and on/off. You might browse down the list and see if anything related to the antivirus program is stopped and simply start it.

Could be something else entirely, just a quick guess without seeing it myself.

All antivirus services are set to Automatic, but they are stopped.
All attempts to manually start antivirus services are met instantly with the "Error 1053: the service did not start in a timely fashion".

Running now, will let you know what the result is - thanks for the link.

I know you said it was fully updated but can you check in add/remove programs and see what .net frameworks are installed?

If none are listed you might hit up microsoft's site (can just google it) and update that.

She currently has everything up to and including .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (and two 3.5 SP1 hotfixes)

Malwarebytes found 101 items, and is asking if it's ok to delete the following (see spoiler)
Is this all safe to delete? Or do I need to somehow make a backup first?
If I need to make a backup, please walk me through the steps in doing so.

It's almost as if the virus is trying to masquerade itself as 5 different AV installs on one system.

All the registry keys are set by whatever virus you have, they're why no antivirus programs would run. Everything looks deleteable.

while backups are always a good idea, I don't see anything in that list that pops out to me a crucial. If you removed them all then things in HijackThis would likely stop working but that would be the extent.

Everything listed is in the software subkey which contains software/windows settings as opposed to something more curcial such as the systems subkey which has hardware driver information.

The worst that would happen from that list is one or two anti spyware programs might stop working and need to be reinstalled.

    I vote for deletion.

Problem solved - after Malwarebytes removed the items she is now able to boot normally with her antivirus guard up and running normally.

Thanks all, I appreciate the help.
Glad this was a relatively 'simple' fix with a good outcome.
