Can I use the XP Home upgrade disk to reformat? Or do I need the full install disks?

Upgrade is fine. You can either format and then pop in a 98 or nt4 cd when it asks as proof of purchase, or you can get past and skip the repair install twice, then repartition and format install. Either will work, though the second is iffy license wise.
