iTunes- SOLVED

My brother has bought only about 2 albums with iTunes. So he just tossed 'em onto his iPod(a birthday present with an iTunes gift card) and then filled up the rest of the space on the little guy with his own CDs.

And that was that. I reformatted the computer about a month ago. My brother wanted to put another CD onto his iPod and when he hooked it up BAM! auto sync and all his music is gone (iTunes didn't have anything on it so well you know how it goes).

He tossed all his other CDs back onto it but couldn't remember exactly what songs he got on iTunes. I told him he should be able to redownload them for free. I thought you could download any song you bought on iTunes 4 or 5 more times without having to repay for well, cases just like this.

So I snoop around iTunes and find the option for "check for purchases".
Perfect!

But then I get this message that pops up saying "purchased music can only be downloaded once".

What's the deal?

ONE MORE QUESTION!!

I told my brother I'd check into asking about the songs in the morning.
In the mean time I told him he could download some new songs.
It asked me to authorize the computer. I did.. but it says it's the 2nd of 5 we can authorize. So I guess iTunes thinks that the "other" computer that I reformatted is.. still on the network.. or something?

It's part of itunes DRM stuff. I think he's out of luck as far as re-downloading the albums for free.

If it's only a few albums, however, it shouldn't be too hard to get them again, is it?

They have to be repurchased? What's the point in that button then? It doesn't even tell me what I had purchased. Only that horrible message.

That button is meant for downloads you fail to complete even once, which can happen with large files such as TV shows. But see my above post. Best of luck.
D'oh ok then, thank you PA yet again.

Unless you hit the "deauthorize" button in iTunes, it assumes that that computer still exists somewhere, and still has that music authorized on it. Once you reformat, you're pretty much screwed on that one. Just try to remember next time. Should you run into a problem with that 5 computer limit, iTMS does allow you to deauthorize all your music on all computers...but I think it's only allowed once a year.

You then just have to reauthorize the computers you still have.
    Ah, fantastic.
Well the one extra shouldn't ever be a problem.

Thanks again. I'll try to remember next time.
