There has been an interest in reviving the
old One-Man Rock Band thread, so here it is!
Since Captain K's old logo is still awesome, here it is again:
Basically, this is a weekly Rock Band contest among members of this board. Every week, a Rock Band song is selected, and each participant plays it on each of the four Rock Band instruments (Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals). At the end of the week, everyone submits their scores for each instrument, and they are ranked for that week based on the total score across all the instruments. This is a friendly contest, mainly intended to provide some extra incentive to play Rock Band by appealing to people's competitive spirits, but awards (in the form of banners that can be worn for a week in the signature) are given to the top three overall contestant, and the top contestant on each of the four instruments.
The G&T One-Man Rock Band Competition
1. Everybody plays the same song for a given week.
2. Set the highest score you can for each part individually--guitar, bass, drums and vocals. You choose the difficulty for each part--a higher difficulty means you
can score more points, but it may be easier for you to get more points on a lower difficulty if it means you can keep a streak longer.
3. Add up the score from every part to get your total score.
4. If you've got the highest total score for that week, you win!
5. The winner chooses the next week's song.
6. Go back to step 1!
7. If you don't want to play every part, you don't have to. Play the instruments you want and submit whatever scores you have by the end of the week. However, part of the point of this contest is to encourage people to play instruments they don't usually, so it is highly encouraged to submit a score on everything.
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat if I don't like the song for a given week? What if somebody chooses a DLC song that I don't have?
If you don't like the song, or if you're unwilling to pay to download a DLC song, you can always sit out for that week.
Although the winner of a given week gets to choose the next week's song, in practice the winner will often take suggestions for what song to do the next week. If one week's song doesn't tickle your fancy, suggest away!
If you're playing on PS2 or Wii and don't have the selected DLC songs, feel free to compete during weeks that we do on-disc songs. There's apparently some issue with vocal scoring being different on PS2 (I wrote this originally about RB1, no idea about RB2), but we choose not to worry about that too much.
What if I can't or don't want to play all the instruments? Can I still compete?
Yep. You won't have a chance in hell of winning the overall contest this way, but you still have a shot at individual instrument awards. It is encouraged to play everything if you can though. You might just find you enjoy it more than you think.
Can I jump in any time?
Absolutely. There's no continuity from week to week, so you can just join in whenever we choose a song you like, or you just feel like it. Similarly, if you are competing, there's no pressure to submit scores every week. Just do what works for you.
How do we submit scores? When is the score submission deadline?
The submission deadline is technically Monday at 5 PM GMT (or 1 PM EST). However, most people tend to post scores sometime on Sunday. If you need to, you can even submit earlier in the week, though please spoiler your submissions if you do so as not to give away your scores to those who would rather not see them yet.
As far as submitting scores, just post them in this thread. The best way to do that is probably like so. You don't have to include the stars if you don't want to.
Guitar (difficulty): xxx,xxx (x stars)
Bass (difficulty): xxx,xxx (x stars)
Drums (difficulty): xxx,xxx (x stars)
Vocals (difficulty): xxx,xxx (x stars)
Total Score: x,xxx,xxx
Do we need to provide proof of our scores?
The honour system works quite well, so that's the method for now. We're not idiots though, so if you post something outrageous, we'll probably call you on it. That said, you don't need to keep meticulous records of your scores. If we ask for it, all we would need is a setlist picture or a leaderboard score.
Is it worth doing this if I can only play up to [difficulty] on [instrument]?
Sure, why not? For one thing, your score on that part might still be competitive--a 99% run on Hard might end up scoring more points than a 90% run on Expert, for instance. And for another, you should be really be doing this just to have fun anyway.
I did really well on a song but my score is really awful compared to other people. What's going on?
The other people are probably using better Overdrive paths. That is, they've figured out (or read from the net somewhere) the exact spots to activate Overdrive in the song in order to maximize their scores.
A lot of songs have Overdrive paths already made for them, and they are available here:
(Note: these are very out of date links. I'll update these once I have to look for OD paths for myself for Week 1.)

If you want DLC paths for guitar and bass, it's a bit harder. Check out the Technique forum for guitar and bass on
the ScoreHero Rock Band forums. There might be threads around explaining OD paths for some DLC songs (though not all of them have had OD paths made for them yet).
If that fails, check out the
leaderboards on ScoreHero for the song that we're playing. Often, one of the higher scores will have a YouTube video accompanying it as proof. Obtain your path by watching the video and copying the activations.
Don't feel obligated to use an OD path if you think it's too much hassle. You probably won't win without one, but that doesn't make you any less of a person.
Okay maybe it does just a little.
If you win... what do you win?
You choose the next week's song.
Also, if you earn any of them, you can proudly display these nerdy (awesome) sig banners (for the following week) to show everyone else how much time you wasted (spent fruitfully) perfecting your scores!
Banners - For Proud Display
(Thanks to Lunker for creating these!)
Here's some thinner versions of the top instrument score banners, in case you need to squeeze a bunch of them into your sig, you incredible badass you.
Current WeekWeek 2: Pinball Wizard by The WhoSubmit scores by 5 PM GMT on Monday, June 1st (this is basically noon EST or 9am PST, barring DST weirdness). Submitting early is acceptable, but please spoiler your submissions. (Any time between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning is normal.)

Are we still doing winner picks the song? It didn't work so well last time cause the same few people always won. Maybe it'd be better do randomly pick between competitors for who gets to choose the next song? Since I'll be putting the results in a spreadsheet anyway I could have it randomly pick a name from the list of players to pick next week's song...
Lump for my RB2 on-disc nomination.
Don't Stop Believing for my DLC nomination.
This is kind of my problem with the competition; ultimately, it boils down to "who can follow the optimal path the best." Not to poop on the thread (hell, I made the graphics for it way back when ), but I've found why playing RB for score doesn't really work as well as I once thought it would.
People are always welcome to participate in one or more of the instrument categories instead of the whole OMB too... to see how high you can rank in drums, or whatever. *shrug*
This last part is true; I always end up rating poorly on vocals on Expert, so I could never hang with the big boys anyway. I would join in for drums, though, because that's what I end up playing most of the time.
I'll second Alive by Pearl Jam then!
On-disc, good on all parts, and nominated twice.
Have at it my friends!
I'm making the due date next Monday (very quick turnaround), May 25th, because I want due dates to be right after the weekend and the new song to come out at the beginning of the week. Plus you're all chomping at the bit for the first week so waiting until June 1st to have the first results seems a bit long.

Didn't beat any of my old scores except my guitar score by ~15k (99% solo with misses under OD). I only did one voxtar attempt cause I ended up playing all 4 instruments in one night and I'm tired of Alive, hehe.

Meh scores all around. Broken equipment really took it out of me. Need to fix some for next time.
Yeah whoops, I meant 185k not 187k. I'll edit the correction in.

Drums - 233178 (99%, 919NS)
No vocals due to lack of time/me being sick
Probably could have FC'd guitar if I spent some time with it. A couple of dumb misses here and there towards the end on drums.

Oh, well. I'll get in on the next one.
EDIT: if somebody else doesn't win next week I added a random name picker to decide who picks the next song instead of the winner.
I am going to FC this on guitar though.
