Why is my new 360 SO LOUD?

I just picked up a new 360 Arcade from Gamestop. Got it home, popped in Fable II, and the DVD drive is very, very, very loud. Is this normal?

Yes. They are very noisy things. The one I've got recently is extremely loud although nothing bad has happened yet so I assume it's normal.

Wow. I don't remember my old 360 being this loud. I mean, it's REALLY spinning. Is there anyway to minimize this?

But he bought an arcade. So no hard drive.

I'm curious as to just how loud it sounds since you're saying it is louder than your previous console.

That. Don't think the damn thing has much space at all does it?

Well if you want to install shit onto it you'll need to buy an Xbox 360 Hardrive, the 20GB ones are pretty cheap.

It's almost distracting from the game. Though I seem to remember hearing that Fable II loads quite a bit from the disc, so maybe that's it?

    No, it's a Jasper.

Also, it says I only something like 80 megs free on the onboard memory. I haven't updated Live and there's only Fable II save on there. What gives?

That will more or less solve your sound problem, though make sure to get a sufficiently large HD (60+) so you can fit all your games on it.

When you say you haven't updated Live, you mean you still have the old style Dashboard? After installing NXE, you should have about 85 MB of free space on a Jasper.

Not only are 360s baseline loud but I've heard people say that Fable 2 is a very noisy game played off the disc. So there's that too.

Assuming it's a recent arcade, you'll also have several XBLA game and 360 game demos preinstalled on there as well. Feel free to delete them if none of them interest you.

I've got a launch model. It's also pretty loud, I can promise.....though generally speaking, it doesn't approach the sound of the game (unless I'm in a particularly quiet point).

But I tend to play my games fairly loud.

It came with a DVD with some games on it, which I traded in right away at the store along with the composite cable (I bought a component for now). I'm not seeing anything besides the Fable II save in my "Memory". Where exactly else should I look?

All right then. Nevermind. If you got one with a CD then you wouldn't have the demos.

They're not all that loud. If it's that loud, it's a sign that something's wrong with the DVD drive. My last refurb ran whisper quiet, and the Jasper I replaced it with this week is only fractionally louder.

On my 3rd dvd drive in my 360, louder than hell. It's a pretty big turn off compared to my whisper quiet PS3. Never really realized how loud it was until having something to compare it to. Hopefully when this one dies when the waranty is over the replacement one will be quieter.

It can get kind of loud, but its most likely Fable 2 causing the problem. It reads a lot off the disc

only real solutions are either get a hard drive and install it or stop playing it.

Fable 2 is the poster child for game installs on 360. The noise the drive makes and the menu lag is unbearable when running off the DVD.

sometimes my 360 is whisper quiet running off the disc on any game (fable included)

sometimes it's like RARGGHH I AM A DVD DRIVE NOISE NOISE when playing.

Take it back if it's that bad. My launch 360 was like a jet turbine spinning up. My 2nd and 3rd 360's are far quieter, even when I use the DVD drive. Both have 120's on them, though, so that's hardly a factor anymore (since I'll install the games).

Well, from the rest of the responses in the thread (and from doing a bit of Googling) it's apparently Fable II's fault. If after buying the HD next week and installing (and checking it with a couple other games) it's still loud as all get out, I'll return it.

Yeah, just in case, but if there's anyone reading this who doesn't already know, NEVER EVER move your 360 while it's running.

Also, don't get a 20 GB hard drive. Yes, they're the cheapest, but I guarantee that after a while, you'll start craving more HD space, if for nothing more than installing more games.

Only because the system shifts in mid-play, either from falling, or they're too stupid to turn it off first.

Or you know, because the system is poorly designed and can just eat discs whenever the hell it feels like it.
