So, I'm thinking of getting a PS3...

For a variety of reasons, partly for Blu-Ray, I'm thinking of picking up a PS3. Mostly, I'm wondering what good games there are for the system that I can't buy for the 360 or PC (with a choice between those, I always go PC for KBAM superiority).

    Metal Gear Solid 4.

inFamous comes out this coming Tuesday. The demo is awesome, the game is getting awesome reviews. I expect there will be awesomeness.

Siren: Blood Curse. The minds behind the original Silent Hill have made a game that combines the survival horror genre with stealth gameplay. It's genius.

Valkyria Chronicles. There's a demo - try it. If you like the demo, you'll love the game. I love the game.

Afrika. It's a bit like Pokemon Snap, but it's in Africa. Import-only for now.

Uncharted. Possibly the best-looking game of this generation, and certainly one of the best games on the PS3. There's a demo, but if you're anything like me you'll hate it.

LBP. You can get limitless hours out of LBP - or around ten, depending on how you approach it.

Ratchet & Clank Future. If you played R&C on PS2, you know you need this.

    Resistance 1 and 2 - are decent sci-fi shooters.

Killzone 2 is crazy-pretty and has awesome multiplayer.

I'm generally not one for platformers, so LBP is out. I might give Killzone 2 a try as it looks pretty good, but trying to play FPS's on a console tends to make me stabby. And Infamous is definitely a must-have.

Demon's Souls! It's a hardcore rogue-like. It's currently available to import from China and includes a full English translation - text and voice - but it's also coming to N/A in the Fall.

i'm going to be honest, here. my girlfriend and i have spent an unreasonable amount of time playing pixeljunk monsters. seriously, it's absurd, it's like an addiction. what you need to do is buy it (and the encore add-on), play it through, love it, and give it up before it becomes a serious crutch

I keep thinking "Hey, we should start a PA league for this!"

Then I realize that (1) someone would have to organize it and co-ordinate with people for race times, (2) we'd probably need separate leagues for Europe and America due to timezone issues, and (3) I'd have to actually get back in practice for it.

Oh, and (4) we'd have to find some way of catering to all four speed classes. By the time I've remembered all this again, I'm staring at a screen showing the map for floor 49 of an item in Disgaea 3, wondering when I started playing it.

Avoid Resistance unless you've never played an FPS. The best that can be said for it is that it's moderately well executed, but it takes absolutely no chances and adds nothing new. Its scores were inflated because it was a PS3 exclusive, and magazines were afraid to be labeled as biased by giving it the mediocre ratings it deserved.

With that exception noted, Chance's list is otherwise good. Also note that a launch PS3 is way better than a current gen one, as they went from hardware PS2 emulation at launch to software emulation to "PS2? Why would you want to play a smelly old PS2 game?"

EDIT: PS2 emulation being important, of course, because not playing Persona 4 should be a crime. And Yakuza 2 is basically Shenmue After Dark, so, uh, YES.

Why does a game need to do something new to be good? I'm a pretty huge FPS player and I enjoyed the hell out of Resistance. It's got solid weapons, interesting enemies to shoot them at, and a functional story to tie it all together, and it controls well. Hell, Killzone 2 had almost no story and did nothing new (cover system have already been used in FPS games) and had loads of complaints about the controls, so I guess people should avoid that too. because, you know, it obviously only got high scores to avoid being called bias.

Well, this just guaranteed that after I buy the hard drive for my 360 and a new TV, that a PS3 is my next purchase. Tell me more about Demon's Souls if you can.

You start the game by creating your character, male or female. You can customize your face with a large amount of values and sliders, so you can make him or her look just the way you want. You then choose a class. Class only determines your starting stats and equipment. Every stat, however, can be upgraded with souls, currency in the game, to a maximum level of 99.

Once you made your character, you're given the option to go through the tutorial or not. The tutorial naturally instructs you on various controls and game mechanics. Your weapons or shields are mapped to the L and R keys, which you can switch between with the D-pad. You can have two items for each side at a time, and the left D-pad button will switch between items mapped to your L key, etc. You can also wield a two-handed weapon in one hand if you have enough Strength. I'll tell you what, it looks awesome.

Pressing triangle will switch a one-handed weapon to a two-handed stance. Up and down on the D-pad switch between magic/miracles and potions/items respectively.

Now if you wanted to, you could equip a shield on both hands, not that that would be too effective. You can dual wield right from the start, for instance. I chose the Knight class, so I started off with a longsword and a shield. In which case, L1 holds up my shield to block, while L2 is used to stun an enemy right as he's attacking. R1 swings my sword, while R2 does a stronger attack. If I attack after I stun an enemy with my shield or weapon, I'll deal a devastating blow to the enemy which often kills them in one hit.

Everything costs endurance, however, from blocking to parrying to attacking, so you have to be aware of what you do. It's not a hack and slash game. Instead, it's more tactical and methodical. You have to be cautious, because death is around every corner. And when you you die, as you most assuredly will at the end of the tutorial you enter soul form. You have less health in this form, but enemies and bosses are also a little easier. You also drop all your souls you've collected when you die, and if you don't go to the spot you died and reclaim your souls, you'll lose them when you die a second time. You can reclaim your body by using items, defeating a boss, or invading a player's game and defeating him.

Inavding a player's game, you say? The game does have multiplayer features, although it does want you to feel alone as you play the game, and it does this very well. The atmosphere and style are really well done at making the world feel gritty and terrifying. There are no lobbies or voice chat for you to coordinate with people.

If you're connected online, you'll sometimes see other people running through the level as ghosts. You can leave messages on the ground for them to read, and if you're in your physical form, you can get two players to join your game if they're in soul form. You can also be invaded, as I said, by other players in soul form who try to kill you and collect your souls and body. You can also do the invading.

You're also free to choose which level you want to go to from the hub of the game, the Nexus. You're not constricted on a set path. If you want to start with 2-1 or 3-1 or 4-1 instead of 1-1, you're free to do so. The Nexus is also where you buy and upgrade yourself and your equipment and spells.

Did that do a good job of covering the game? There are a lot of weapons and equipment for you to find and upgrade, and looking at the Pantheon in the game, the end-game players all seem to look fairly different. This area in the Nexus, the Pantheon, lets you view the actual model of other characters and their stats and ranks. It's pretty neat to see how those top players look and what their stats are.

I'm not sure you can call Demon's Souls a roguelike. Roguelikes normally take place on a grid and are strictly turn based. It looks like a more action oriented Elder Scrolls to me, especially with their red, blue and green bars

You know, I'm not actually really familiar with roguelikes, but that's just what it was called in the thread we have on it so that's what I wrote down. :P

It's a tactical, gritty dungeon crawler. That might be describe it better in a few words. The game also wants to kill you very, very much, so it's a hard game. It's not hard in a cheap kind of way, though.

I watched a little review of it on YouTube and the guy said it was nothing like Oblivion at all. Roguelikes are not strictly ASCII grid based by any means. If you think having a stamina bar makes something Oblivion like you should try playing some games older than 2000.

I'd recommend you at least try Resistance. It's cheap since it's Greatest Hits, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I'm not even much of a FPS guy, but I played through it two or three times, as well as the sequel.

Outside of that, and touched upon by bsjezz, there's a nice little collection of PSN games like the Pixeljunk series, Flower, and the upcoming Fat Princess that are surely worth a look as well, not to mention the PSOne Classics section.

Nice to see some others who enjoyed Resistance. I think it played differently to a lot of shooters thanks to Insomniacs creativity with weapon design: The sniper rifle with a slow motion effect, the Auger which is terrifying in the hands of the chimera when you are on low health and the Hailstorm with the ricocheting bullets <3. The setting was really cool too.

I think those who write it off came into the game overly negative because I don't see how any shooter fan can not have fun with Resistance FOM. No comment on the sequel, I am waiting for a price drop! :P

Well, I mainly loved it because it was a fucking energizer bunny. It just kept going and going. Every time I thought it would end, it threw even more at me. Gives a real sense of effort put into a shooter when it's actually longer than 6 hours, and never feels repetitive. I was kind of annoyed at R2's single player in this aspect. it was so short. They spent so long making huge scale set piece bosses, and forgot what made Resistance Resistance.
