Zenonia: Action RPG for Iphone/Ipod Touch

In celebration of the Memorial Day Weekend, it looks like us Iphone gamers have a new game out, Zenonia for $5.99 (app store link).

What is Zedonia?

Here's the Preview from Touch Arcade:
Zenonia is GAMEVIL's epic RPG which has absolutely decimated the mobile sales charts in Korea this year and I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to play the English iPhone beta for a while now. While we had previously previewed an early version of the game at GDC, the text had not yet been translated at that time.

If you've been looking for something on the App Store that compares to the classic 16-bit RPG's from days of yore, Zenonia may just be what you've been searching for — especially since according to GAMEVIL, Zenonia comes packed with over 40 hours of gameplay.

Zenonia isn't as simple as just completing the main quest and being finished, included is a good and evil decision system that reminds me a lot of Knights of the Old Republic. As long as you choose a slightly different alignment every time in how your character responds, Zenonia should have a decent amount of replay value. (Not that replay value is even a big deal if the 40 hour claim holds true.)

The game controls using an on-screen D-Pad which feels clunky at first but quickly becomes second nature. GAMEVIL seems to have put a lot of thought in to how the D-Pad functions and the limitations of on-screen controls. You don't need to always be facing what you're attacking, just getting in range and tapping the attack button will make your character automatically turn to the nearest monster. It's kind of like the 2D version of aim assist that is common in a lot of iPhone 3D shooters.

I'm reluctant to compare Zenonia to the Zelda series, but it is inevitable. GAMEVIL seems to have designed this game specifically for gamers clamoring for a classic action RPG experience, and the beta I've been playing is exactly that. Instead of summarizing the setting of the game, I decided shooting a video would be more appropriate:

Here is the 1st trailer:

And the first ten minutes (courtesy of Touch Arcade)

I want to pick this up now, but I may wait until payday (Friday).

Has anyone else picked this up yet?

It's apparently a port from some korean phone and there are a few translation issues and bugs that are getting addressed in an update coming out soon. I've heard good things and I'll probably pick it up soon.

I just bought this today and played it for a couple hours and I love it. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out how easy and smooth it was to control with the iphone/touch-screen interface.

The game does have some translation / grammar errors, but I can forgive it since the game just looks & feels so good. It reminds me of playing Secret of Mana from back in the day. I know I'm coming off like an advertiser, but this game could had easily been sold for $30-$40 on the Nintendo DS.

Just found this thread, and fuck this game. I should be doing homework, but oh noooooo, this game is too damn fun.

Character names? Terrible. Story? Predictable. Hack and slash action with lots of loot? Fuck you guys.

Also, I hear the story has a bit of branching... good and evil paths and all that. :^:

The story is schizo as all fuck. It starts out predictable as fuck, but with weird oddities like one character breaking into swears censored with, literally, "beep" instead of the typical punctuation symbols. And when you get the standard history of the world background information, your character states that he naturally is unfamiliar with it, as he just started playing the game.

Game itself is like a mix between Diablo and World of Warcraft. Hack and Slash and complete with "Kill five X" sidequests.

I refuse to play any game where they put a d-pad on the touch screen.

It's difficult to get used to a touch screen over an actual d-pad, but I actually think they did a good job with this. I have an easier time using this than the virtual-analog on Hero Of Sparta, which is also an awesome game.

IGN's review calls it at around 40 hours. The gamevil forums have people beating the game on average (seemingly) at around level 60-70, so take from that what you will.

Fuck shit. Thats a good 30 hours more than I thought it would be.

Also, <3 the reviews on the iTunes store:

"Before the hype machine kicked into full gear, Zenonia could've been a new kind of pasta for all I knew.

edit: Aside from this game I have, Real Soccer, Peggle, Radio Flare, Galcon. Any other good games out there I am missing? Its hard to find a site that reviews iPhone/Touch games. Well, that just doesnt give every shiny game 5 stars.

Well I am just now in the starting town getting quest and what not and I must say, this is very fun so far. The character names are stupid as get out though, Regret, Pardon, Tender...sigh. I do say, the first little minor side story thing is hilarious
The part where you go to collect a debt for someone and his response is, "Well I cant, tell you what, go cut down this tree where my loan shark proposed to his wife so I can get fire wood to make a sword to then pay off the debt.

    Comedy.

Spoilering this, as it's a bit OT... there is a whole thread for iPhone games.
Only communists don't buy iShoot.. it is iPhone Scorched Earth, and every bit of awesome that entails.

Hero of Sparta is a fun hack-and-slash type of game, in the vein of God of War (with QTEs even).

Tiki Towers if great if you liked World of Goo.

Top Gun is absolutely awesome... tilt control, on rails gameplay. Think Afterburner with Kenny Loggins.

Flight Control is fun, but hard to describe. For $.99, there's little reason not to grab it.

Wolfenstein 3D is a great port, but pretty much just makes me want them to hurry up with a DOOM release.

Vay is an -ok- port of the old SegaCD game... not bad, not amazing, but decent enough.

Sweet. I will check those out. Also it seems my searching skills are lames, where is this thread you speak of?

Back on topic: With the skill tree, is it possible to learn everything from attack and passive?

I've been playing the hell out of this game. It plays like a legend of Zelda/Secret of mana cross with a loot and quest system that is stolen from world of warcraft/diablo. It's absurdly addicting, and if it had online co-op or some such, I'd never see daylight.

This game is iPhone only... not sure if there are similar games to it. :\

Also, no, it is not possible to learn everything. You can max out at level 99, so you won't have enough skill points to learn everything. Similar to Diablo, you have to choose. Some of the choices are easy, though. You won't need to increase accuracy if you're an assassin, since you'll be raising dex so much. For instance, with my assassin I picked a couple attack skills (Ice Spear and Thunderstorm, though the latter costs tons of SP) Invisibility as an "oh shit I'm out of healing items, I need to GTFO," and am focusing the rest on passives, since I depend on them so much. Look over each one, figure out what you like, and go for it.

With my assassin i've found my passive skills to be much better than active skills.

Also there's an item that lets you redistribute your stat points if you fuck up. Another similarity to WoW in that regard.

Just started. The plot is hilariously terrible. And seriously, the main character's name is "Regret"? REALLY?

Also, the DPad is terrible, but it seems pretty fun. Controls are just a bitch to get used to. I went for the Warrior, so we'll see how that works out.

Yeah, the plot is terribad, pretend you've never played a game past the 16-bit era, or ignore the plot completely and it's not all that grating.

And I will say the d-pad for this game is better than most other iphone games, but you'll find that every single time you sit down to play this game, you'll have to reacquaint yourself with it all over again. Luckly if an enemy is adjacent to you, you'll auto turn to attack them.

Pulling this back from the dead then, I just picked this game up after seeing it in the iPhone/iPod games thread and so far I've been pretty pleased. I think I'm playing a good paladin--but I have an evil assassin only a few levels behind that keeps on drawing me away. It seems to me that the assassin is by far the most popular class.
