Learning Chinese

I'm looking for a good beginning book to help me learn Mandarin. I would like something with a good progression for grammar and common sayings. I would further prefer the simplified character set. I'm less concerned with any audio components as my wife (who is Chinese) can help me with that. I just want a book to guide my learning and that has good gramatical descriptions.

The Introductory chinese course at my University uses The New Practical Chinese Reader:

It has at least worked out fairly well for me.

    I learned using Integrated Chinese

    amazon.com

It's laid out fairly well, and focuses on reading and writing.

Seconding this, although I believe they came out with a new version last year. Our Uni's Chinese One class used it.
