Learning Piano thread

I've been worried about making one of these threads before because of the reaction they usually get, but here goes. I posted in the most recent "I want a piano" thread, but still have a few questions.
  • Played guitar for 6 years
  • Want to learn piano
  • will be taking lessons
  • want a keyboard to practice on

I'm in no way serious about being professional. I just want to casually learn how to play the piano

I need a keyboard for portability, headphone jack...ability and...midi out ability.

1) Do I want weighted keys?
2) Is the Korg SP250 any good? This was what I was probably going to buy

Thanks for the input

I actually also wish to learn piano/keyboard in a casual manner. There's apparently some sort of fire sale going on at MusiciansFriend.com, if you're into that sort of thing. Saw the sale on Consumerist.

edit: Okay, looking up the Korg SP250, I see that it's a full 88 key, standing keyboard with a pedal. For some reason I wasn't even aware they made these.

I'm debating paying 800+ for the whole shebang, or some sort of cheaper alternative.

Are you going to be taking lessons on an actual piano? If so you'll want to have weighted keys so that the feeling of the keyboard is the same as the feeling of the keys on the piano. The difference in touch will screw with you if you have to change from real keys to non-weighted keys.

well, I have a piano, but I can't use it often because of where it is in the house. So weighted keys seems to be what I want.

    Get weighted keys.

    Just. Do. it.

Yeah. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

It comes with one pedal, will I need anything else? I imagine this is a sustain pedal?

Apparently, according to a guy at my local music store, korg are shit. I tried a Yamaha p85 which was nice...

I'm going to another today to try an SP250, p85 and a casio...320x? or something. The korg gets really good reviews, but he seemed to think the p85 was better.
