What the Hell do I do with this relic of Ayleid technology? What are the games I should be playing on this bad boy? I never owned one as a kid, so literally have no idea what I should look out for. Lemme just nip this in the bud and say that I'm already sick of Sonic the Hedgehog. It came with Jurassic Park, which is a wonderful thing, if only for the rich saurian diversity.
EDIT: I guess this as also a good a place as any to thank everyone who contributed to my last recommendation thread, which ended up leading me to buy Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. They were damn fine games.
No Sonic? Well, then... Shit, I dunno, I had a SNES
Yeah, see this is my problem. I was all excited to play some retro-tastic games, I do some quick Googling, and every top ten list for the Genesis is Sonic the Hedgehog. I know Sonic the Hedgehog. I can play as much Sonic as I want on several different 360 demos.
Streets of Rage series, General Chaos, Cyborg Justice, Shining Force I & II, maybe one of the Road Rash games, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Gemfire...man, I'm gonna end up digging mine out of storage now.
Edit: Just saw you mentioned the 360. If you ever plan on getting Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, many of the good games are included there.
All of the above reviews, seconded. Some of my favorites: Gunstar Heroes, General Chaos, Skitchin', Streets of Rage (series), Ristar, Shining Force II. Those are just a few, but I'm on my way out at the moment. I'm quite sure that this thread will help you and remind everyone of some forgotten gems.
Oh hey, Another World is on the Genesis. I thought that was only on the PC and SNES. Actually, a lot of games I remember being on the SNES are on both the SNES and Genesis. Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage is fun, if you like brawlers.
Also seconding Flashback (one of my favorite games of all time), Cyborg Justice for the weirdness, Comix Zone, Strider (way cooler than the arcade version), and Eternal Champions. Actually I think I'm firsting that last one, but it's way awesome. It's on Virtual Console for the Wii-rich but Genesis-poor.
edit: Another World is also fantastic (same dude as Flashback)- it was called Out Of This World in the North American market..
Also, there was another beat-em-up I loved but can't remember the name to. You made a robot out of numerous parts, then beat the shit out of other robots in side-scrolling action.

Phantasy Star 4 (part 2 also if you don't mind old-fashioned RPG grinding stuff)
Dynamite Headdy
Street Fighter series
Golden Axe series
Beyond Oasis
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Fatal Labyrinth
Toejam & Earl (1 and 2)
Vectorman (1 and 2)
Landstalker
Gunstar Heroes
Humans (if you like puzzle games)
Jungle Strike (Desert Strike and Urban Strike too)
Rocket Knight Adventures (and the sequel, Sparkster)
Ristar
Kid Chameleon
Mega Bomberman
Flashback
General Chaos
Road Rash 3 (this game is fucking metal)
Columns
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force 1 and 2
Lethal Enforcers 2 (if you can score the lightgun)
Edit - And yes get Comix Zone.
Edit - And the X-Men game.
Also, there was another beat-em-up I loved but can't remember the name to. You made a robot out of numerous parts, then beat the shit out of other robots in side-scrolling action.
That was Cyborg Justice. You could rip off your opponent's arm and either swap out your own arm for it or throw it at them for the ultimate fuck-you. If you ripped off their arm you could then rip off their torso and absorb its precious electro-juice to regenerate health.
It's an amazing (and amazingly weird) game.

Adventures of Batman and Robin (this is hard and I've only recently played it)
The other X-Men game too!
I ran a Genesis poll a couple years back that had some pretty good results. Check it if you just want general recommendations: http://www.sixfortyfive.com/genesis/
Some personal suggestions and notes:
Streets of Rage 2 - This is the only game in the series that really stands up (and probably the best beat-em-up ever). SoR1 is primitive in comparison, and SoR3 breaks just as many things as it improves upon.
Phantasy Star IV - Also the only game in this particular series that stands up. PSII might be worth it if you can put up with grindfests with 8-bit era design and production values, though.
Good shooters include Gunstar Heroes, Ranger-X, Contra Hard Corps, Alien Soldier, and others that I'm less familiar with. I'm not a big fan of Vectorman, though (too easy and too many gimmick stages). There's also shmups like the Thunder Force / Lightening Force series (TF4 is considered to be the best), Battle Mania / Trouble Shooters, and more one-off games than I can count. If there's one thing that the SNES did well that the Genesis lacked, it's JRPGs; if there's one thing the Genesis did well that the SNES lacked, it's 2D shooters. Seriously, there's a lot to look into on this front.
Toe Jam & Earl (the first game) is a hilarious roguelike, and at least twice as fun in co-op.
Non-Sonic platformers worth mentioning include Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Monster World IV.
Pirates! Gold was a great update of Sid Meier's Pirates. Seriously underrated game there. I played that on Sega Channel all the time.
Tiny Toons ACME All-Stars is the greatest sports game of all time. No foolin'. Beats the crap out of NBA Jam and also has Soccer and some mini-games to boot.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is worth it for the LOL factor alone.
Other noteworthy games I'd recommend have been covered, I think.
Also, there was another beat-em-up I loved but can't remember the name to. You made a robot out of numerous parts, then beat the shit out of other robots in side-scrolling action.

Ah thanks. Everyone was mentioning that, and it sounded familiar, but I wasn't entirely certain. Man, that and Comix Zone were the best. So much fun was had with friends in those two games.

Oh man, I had Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. That game is cracked out in a big way. You play Michael Jackson and run around "rescuing" children from mobsters. I swear to God that the "you rescued a child!" sprite animation makes it look like Michael is forcing the kid to blow him.
And that's not even the wackiest part of the game.
edit: As much as I loved Phantasy Star II at the time, it hasn't held up well at all. PSIV, however, is a true classic. PSIII was good, but ultimately forgettable.
A lot of the good ones have been mentioned. There's also Zero Tolerance, a pretty good Doom-like FPS. The two Ecco the Dolphin games are not only pretty, but an interesting departure from your standard platformer.
Also, Ranger X. It's a sidescroller with a giant robot. With a laser gun. And a jetpack. And a motorcycle. And you fucking kick things in the face.
Edit: And seriously, noone's mentioned Zero Wing yet?
Some more comments and a few anti-recommendations:
Mega Bomberman is one of the better Bomberman games as far as the classic singleplayer campaigns are concerned. It's also the same game as Bomberman '94 on the TG-16, FYI.
I enjoyed Street Fighter more on the Genesis than the SNES due to the controller, but there are better ports to be had these days. Eternal Champions had an awesome setting and cast for a fighting game, but I don't recall the game itself to be that noteworthy. The Sega CD sequel supposedly improved on a lot of things, though, and it had the greatest character ever to boot (the Senator!).
Golden Axe is a poor man's Streets of Rage, and the only SOR game worth getting is the 2nd. Covered that already.
Road Rash and Skitchin' are two franchises that I enjoyed in their heyday, but I don't think either has held up well at all.
Columns is a really lame Tetris-clone. Puyo Puyo / Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is worthwhile, though.
Though I wouldn't go so far as to say that you shouldn't at least try any of the above as long as they can be had for cheap, and most if not all of them can be.

Seconding beyond oasis (or story of thor, if you're european), Chaos Engine and Earthworm Jim
And i remember Soleil (or crusader of centy, i think, in the states) being a fairly decent zelda clone. Probably worth checking out if you like that sort of thing.
Though this makes me wonder just how common this practice of renaming games between murka and europe was in the 16-bit days.

Now Playing:
Celeste [Switch] - She'll be wrestling with inner demons when she comes...
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age [Switch] - Sit down and watch our game play itself
Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey may be worth looking into. These were great twists on the sports genre in their day. I have no idea if either has held up well or not, as it's been ages since I've played either.
Most 3rd party games that appeared on both the Genesis and SNES were quite different. Juraasic Park, Aladdin, Shadowrun, and others were completely different games rather than mere ports. As far as straight ports are concerned, Earthworm Jim 1 is one of those rare cases that's somewhat better on the Genesis than the SNES, mostly due to being designed for the former system first.
Is the thread where I start an argument over whether Shadowrun for the Genesis was better than the one for the Super Nintendo? In any case, get Shadowrun!

I played the Genesis one on the Sega Channel when I was a kid and didn't get it, and after highschool played the SNES one.
It made me wish I had the Genesis one to play. They're profoundly different.
The Genesis version is a better representation of the actual RPG rules, but the SNES version is a better representation of the SR setting. Great damn music too.
Honestly, I only ever rented it, but it left quite the impression on me. They really should bring it out on the Virtual Console.
I played the holy bejeezus out of this game. It actually is the first in a series called Langrisser. The first was the only one ever released state side unfortunately. This can be an expensive game though, not quite Shining Force 2 expensive, but it can get up there.

You can throw intentional interceptions with exploding footballs. Of course they have held up.

Like I said, it's been ages since I played them. I barely remember them and I wasn't even very familiar with the rules of football back then either. I think I usually won just by killing enough members of the opposing team to force a forfeit.

Also Kid Chameleon is an inspired platformer.

Yes.
Yes.
May I also recommend Comix Zone, Chaos Engine, Earthworm Jim, Ristar (as an alternative to Sonic) and James Pond II: RoboCod.
Just a couple of my favs growing up.
