Yeah don't install that. It sounds silly. If gorges can eat chambers, soon they will be able to devour hives whole! And where would we be? Without hives. That's right. Hiveless.
This looks great, but I would be terribly afraid of being eaten if I were a marine, and terribly afraid of sucking if I were an alien.
Needless to say, I will eventually cave in and buy the Half Life 1 pack. (Gulp, this probably isn't the place to mention that I've never played Half Life 1 or it's expansions. I know, I know, what have I been doing these past 10 years?)

No but this would be a great place to mention how horrible your life has been up until now and the different things you are doing to correct this.
It depends on what your team is currently doing. You can only have 1 type of upgrade chamber per hive, and you are limited to building what your current hives allow.
For example, if we have 1 hive and I drop a Sensory chamber because I am a newb and don't know that going Sensory first is full of fail, then my team is locked to using only Sensory chambers for the time being. We only have 1 hive, and that hive is locked to Sensory chambers. When we build a second hive, we now have a second upgrade chamber. If you then drop a Defense chamber, now we can build both Sensory and Defense chambers.
As a side note, the type and number of chamber also determines what evolutions you can have as a life form. If you have only Defense, then you are limited to Defense upgrades. The number of those chambers determines how powerful that upgrade is, to a maximum of 3. This is what the icons are on the right side of the screen, and why they are stacked when you have enough of them.
EDIT
Also I hope I don't have to point out that you can only build when you are a Gorge. I am pretty sure you know this but just want to state the obvious for everyone's benefit.
Also, it's very, very important for aliens to talk about who is doing what with their resources in the beginning of the round. If you want to save for straight onos, fine. It's a bit stingy, and I hope you're a good onos, but if your team knows that from the get-go, they can plan for it.
From memory, ideally you always want at least the following every game: a hive gorge, a person that saves straight to fade, all three chambers and minimum 2 RT's (resource towers) dropped. Many times it's better for the skulks to run and go gorge to drop an RT, then go back to the hive and drop chambers rather than one person get all 3 chambers and another to get 2 RT's.
Also, many people not very familiar with the game underestimate the effectiveness of killing the enemy's RTs. If you're on alien (double so if you have trouble killing marines) and someone isn't already killing RTs, go chomp chomp.

If marines maintain at least 3 RTs they can tech up really fast. So its important for aliens to take out as many marine RTs as possible. When Marines hit 5 RTs, aliens are in trouble.

Well, I got on my support account, and sent a message about my account not working. Now, it works and logs in fine. However, I still can't buy anything. Every time I try to check my shopping cart or go to check out, whatever I put in there disappears. And it's not like I already own half life...

Ugh, this summer is going to be bad enough, without buying all these Steam games. But I can't resist all of this talk of me being killed in new and terrifying ways!
Crashed and lost my spot, but being as the sun is rising here and I have work in a few hour I think I'll call it a night. Good to see the game has held up well, hope you guys are planning on doing this again because I feel like I just barely dipped my toe in. Have fun with the rest of the night guys!
This may be a stupid question, but how do I start up NS once I'm in steam?
I couldn't find a file to start it up in the Natural Selection folder and it's the only thing stopping me from playing it at the moment. Its been ages since I've played a HL mod and completely forgotten.

After you run the installer, restart steam, and it appears in your games list.
I had fun tonight, even took the commander role when the server only had two people on it. Figured out the commands, which is helpful. I just need to learn the strategy and I'll be good to go.

If you 're into this sort of thing, here are some basic commanding tips and this is probably one of, if not, the best commanding guides available online. It's quite in depth, and is obviously geared toward a more competitive playstyle.
Great guides. The people who have played with me in the chair can probably point out the stuff from those that I still remember and the stuff I have very clearly forgotten!
That second link is a great guide, but keep in mind that is was written for an earlier version than the current 3.2. Some of the strategy section involving when to rush in and shotgun a hive does not apply, because now aliens can teleport using only the hive without needing movement chambers.
I have noticed a lot of turret spam in our games, and it made me smile because I had not seen that for a very long time. I think turrets do have their place in small games (4v4 and below) simply because there are not enough bodies to go around. A turret factory+ 3 turrets= shotguns for most/all of your team, keep that in mind.
I'm really glad there are so many people playing this again. There were some great games last night, I hope people stay interested for a while.
Turrets are only good for alerting you that there are enemies around. "What's that, boy? A skulk is on the wall? Good turret. Who's a good turret? Yes you are! Yes you are!"

Turrets are pretty useless.
Minding, I remember the good ole days when they weren't useless and you could have billions of them...
In 1.04 I used to hang out in vents and spike turret farms for many minutes on end as a lerk. The best part was when marines would phase in to find out wtf is going on and they'd just die to my invisible spikes.

I remember the drama when lerks had their spikes taken away and were given a bite.
There was a "nostalgia" server running 1.04 at one point. I don't think its still around. I miss the epic hour long games from that version, but I don't miss the broken onos hitboxes, buggy fade blink, and balance issues.
Does anyone remember the marine resource bug from the earliest release version? The marine team got crazy high res, way more than they should have. Commanders could drop unending piles of guns/ha/jp. I remember one server where commanders would get booted if they didn't have organized piles of stuff in base at all times. Good times.
The thing I miss most is probably the 1 gorge alien resource model. It was much less forgiving, but a lot more strategic and encouraged alien teamwork more than the current model.
Ok, I am reinstalling HL so I can play NS. Is there some server we play on? I havn't looked through the whole thread but I havn't seen anything but the Steam group so far.
Sure it was a waste of resources, but nothing was funnier than an impassable, self-healing wall right in the Marine's way that needed either multiple siege cannons or extended grenades to fell.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
OH man, making killer Walls of Lame? DCs and OCs woven together completely blocking a hallway. Then they changed how DCs worked by only healing 3 or so units nearest them, weakening the wall. Then they removed the stacking.

Mmmmm evolving.
I love me some turrets (including offense chambers) but that link just confirms what I suspected, they're completely worthless.
