When is the next 1 vs. 100 show?Full schedule of shows hereWhat's all this, then?
This is the open Beta for 1 vs. 100, Microsoft's first push for its Primetime Games initiative. It's free to all Live Gold members and is a multiple-choice trivia game. The hook is that it's a scheduled show, only open for people to play at predetermined times, just like a TV series. Shows range from 30 minutes to 2 hours long, though you can jump in and out whenever you want.
The 1 vs. 100 Beta FAQHow does it play?
In the
Live Show (1 vs. 100's main mode of play), there are three types of players:
- The One (the main contestant)
- The Mob (a panel of 100 people playing against The One)
- The Crowd (everyone else—the show's "audience")
All players, regardless of role (Mob, One, Crowd), try to answer trivia questions correctly for score. The consequences of a wrong answer depend on the role the player occupies: The One, part of The Mob, or part of The Crowd. The One wins the game and if he or she eliminates all the members of The Mob. If time runs out, and the One has not eliminated all Mob members, it’s a draw. The One loses if he or she answers a single question incorrectly—and that means all the remaining Mob members win the game. Members of The Mob who miss a question are sent to The Crowd, where they can still play the game.
The Crowd is competing against itself: The top 3 scorers in The Crowd will win prizes. There's no real penalty for missing a question, but answering questions right in a row will earn a combo Streak bonus, answering quickly will earn a Speed bonus and you can occasionally win Skip token that let you pass on a question (and preserve your Streak).
A Live Show round ends when The One wins or is knocked out; a new round will begin shortly after, with a new One and Mob randomly picked from the existing players.
Note that this is all for the Live Show—there's also Extended Play, which essentially makes everyone a member of The Crowd and pits them against each other. These shows last 30 minutes apiece.
I heard you can win shit with this, Y/N?
Y, though only when the show goes live—we're still in Beta, so the only prize you'll get for answering a question right is the warm satisfaction of a job well done. But there is a sweepstakes going on, and for participating you'll earn chances to win TVs, Zunes and other assorted Microsoft goods.

Suck on that, Home!
people wear that?
Anyway. Looking forward to seeing this in the UK, too. Wonder what other classic TV shows they'll bring to the service! Would love Deal or No Deal with MS Points in the boxes, with a 16th player playing the dealer or something.
XBL/PSN/Steam: APZonerunner
I mentioned this in the sales thread, but I would lose my shit if MS somehow worked out a deal with Jellyvision to get You Don't Know Jack on their system. There were a handful of other games I remember playing along with YDKJ: Get the Picture, Acrophobia and some kind of ziggurat trivia game where you were given multi-choice questions and had to guess which would be the most popular answer.
Well, they can't, which is why this fails.
It's free, and it will be fun.
I challenge anyone from PA who ends up as the one to work 'wang' into the conversation.
Do you think you can win?
Yes, I wang. Can. Can wang.
The extended play shows are a half hour long, and you do 37 questions. They tend to start out easy then move towards hard. You get a bonus for consecutive right answers, a bonus for speed of answer entry, and obviously getting questions right gets you points. With so many people playing, inevitably the top positioning comes down to who has been answering faster. They give you three 'stat' breaks lasting around 30 seconds each, wherein you might see a short commercial.
The actual shows are 2 hours long, and follow the normal format of a one, a mob, and the crowd. They seem to break every 15 minutes for a commercial, as well as the stat breaks from before. Their live host is kind of a retard, but he only cuts in between rounds for the most part so you can happily ignore him. While the game is on, everyone is blissfully quiet, so you don't get that annoying 'talk 5 minutes about your answer' from say like, Millionaire. We were getting something like 8 or 9 rounds in per 2 hours. Apparently your performance on questions determines your odds of being selected as the one or the mob, but they were never more specific than that.
It is faily entertaining to play along. Most of the entertainment for me comes from seeing how many people get the answer wrong on obvious questions. Or insane questions. For example "<Some star> recently announced having two children by what unusual method? A: Surrogate. B: Virgin Birth. C: Kidnapping." I shit you not, 24 people in the mob were knocked out by that question. Wife and I were laughing pretty hard.
Because it's beta and there's no skill prizes, you'll see a lot of ones do stupid things like never taking the money over the mob, because what's the point, and wasting their helps. Once it's out of beta though, and there's actual MS points for stake, it'd be entertaining in a rooting for or against the one sort of way.
Still sounds fun tho, I'm excited for it. I have it downloaded from the Canadian beta (someone from America's Hat invited me to a game) but I couldn't join.
I do not believe this.
So you can actually win and lose money? Hmmm.
The Live shows only run at scheduled times, so the host is only on during those times. Two hours a couple of evenings a week. The extended play will be much more frequent, and I think good performance in those give you a better chance at being selected as The One.
When I was playing, there were something like 16,000 people playing it at the same time, and that was only in Canada. Once this thing hits the entire continent, it is going to be veeeery tough to be chosen as The One. Shouldn't be too tough to get into the Mob, though (I guess about 100 times easier), and you can still win MS Points that way.
The One made it all the way one time, and that prize was 10,000 MS Points. Not too shabby. Now, if The One screws up, supposedly the Mob splits the profit, but I'm not sure how saaay...60 people are going to split 450 points. There was one time when there was only me and 4 others left, and we would have split 8,000 points or so, so that would've been cool.
All in all, it was pretty fun, and for free, it will definitely be something I play quite often.

You don't lose MS points that you currently have. You can only win more. I think what they mean by "at stake" is that, in typical game show fashion, you could lose your potential reward. For example, if you get this question right, you get 1,200 MSP but if you get it wrong, you "lose" that prize.
In other words, don't worry. There's no penalty for signing up and being in the game. Well, perhaps you could lose your pride if you get an easy question wrong.

Still, it's interesting that they are trying new things like this on LIVE.
Enlist in Star Citizen! Citizenship must be earned!
That's the beauty of hinding behind a screen name and an avatar.
If you are that guy, who cares?
Side note: I still do not have an avatar. I wonder if that is going to cause a problem, or if I will be the shadow person that everyone sees now.
Yup, for example this evening a "One" worked his way up to only two players in the "Mob" left. He had 6,000 MSP in his bank, he was able to keep the points, or keep going to see if he could beat the last two mob players for a win of 10,000 MSP. He lost though, lost all the points, and the remaining two players got the free XBLA game and 800 MSP a piece.
Me and a friend actually made it into the mob tonight, unfortunately the douchebag One decided to take the money (600 points) after two questions :P It was kind of funny though, there was no host this evening but it was a live session of the game. So each time they went to the host, it was just some creepy low pitched voice counting down. Still a lot of fun, host or not. Should really get a bit list of players together tomorrow so the parties of four can be Arcadians, and not just random people.
I'm wondering if, since it's more widespread tomorrow, if the new beta will actually have real prizes, or if it'll all still be just for fun like the Canadian beta has been.
I made it to the Mob as well, but lost at the first question. Goddammit, I don't know my Michael Jackson trivia. :P
From the web site, it looks like there's no skill-based prizes yet for the Beta, so it's essentially just for fun. Well, merely participating does give you more chances to win, so there is some benefit to playing.

Using google to win: There is not nearly enough time. You have maybe 4 seconds to answer the question. The questions aren't as straight forward as "What year did Bob Smith die in," so even if you are the fastest typer alive or have a buddy doing it for you, it won't happen. Also, when you are part of the crowd you want the most points to make it into the top 10 (to win the arcade game) and you need to be lightning fast for that--you need to not only get all the questions right but also to be the fastest. Otherwise, you're clumped along with the rest of the thousands playing in the crowd.
Prizes! You can't win anything during the beta, so if you get to be The One, just go all the way. You won't win if you "take the money" anyway. The live host made fun of everyone who chose "take the money" for that very reason. You get the "Sweepstakes" entries.. but whatever.
The mob! The mob can only win points after 60 people have been eliminated. In other words, they will never split 1400MS points between 80 people, should The One lose at that point. It needs to be down to the last 40 or fewer before the mob gets the points.
"That guy": Don't worry. There are enough simpletons playing this game that you won't have to worry about being the dumbest one there if you ever do get to play as The One. When I was playing one night, one guy missed this question:
"What famous explorer recently got a makeover by Mattel?"
A) Ford Marco Polo C) Magellan D) Dora
Live commentary: Who said 24 hours a day? He is only on during the live shows, which are scheduled throughout the week. It shows up on your dashboard and you can set yourself reminders and everything. I've only heard him talk a handful of times though.. I guess they're still working out the kinks. He is charismatic though and does sound like a game show host, rather than some random nerdy guy who makes jokes that make people feel embarrassed for him.
Talky talky: The game puts you into a party of four players. You can talk over voice with the others in your party, and you also see their points and everything as you play. It makes it more interesting, instead of playing against 10,000 faceless people, you're sort of playing with 3 others more closely... like they are the people sitting next to you in the crowd.
Setting reminders sounds awesome. Does it just send you a message?
You don't need to come on time. You can hop in whenever you like.
What I never understood was how to play with a friend locally. It says you can have a guest play with you, who would not be eligible for prizes. I was never able to get a guest to join in because it kept saying they were on a silver account, but it specifically says in the game that guest mode is for silver accounts.
Other local gold accounts can play along and win prizes with you.
We did it here. There was me, and my brother logged in as a guest. He was gaining points and whatnot, but not getting any sweepstakes entries, and when we logged out, his points were gone.
Switch - SW-3699-5063-5018
How did you manage that? Just press start on another controller while signed in to a silver account?
When I did that, it said you need a gold account to compete but silver accounts can play as guests... there were no other options anywhere that I could see.
Maybe it was a bug that they worked out.
10:30 eastern. Still waiting for the reminder to go off.
I guess I'll play GTA for a little bit and try later.
