Alright, couple of quick questions...

My wife and I have found a reasonable way to mvoe into a home and come out on the financial plus side next year

The two quick questions are: Does anyone have any experience in home quality from D.R. Horton?

And based on the following floorplan would the best place for a network patch panel+server be in the laundry room, or the clest near the living room?

It sure would be cool if your dryer duct broke and coated all your network hardware in a fine layer of warm condensation.

That's why I figured it would be better near the living room area, away from the laundry room....

That's a really nice lay out.

About the closet and/or dryer area - heat.
There probably aren't ducts in those areas. I would be worried about heat build up more then anything.

i have my stuff in a 10x9 room right now and am having heat issues even with airconditioning in that room.

Well, it also just occured to me looking at that layout that the Laundry room is quite central, which for wireless connectivity is quite optimal...

Heat isn't that much of an issue to me though since the room the server is in now is kinda hot... But I do see your point, I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow when we look at the model home again... I could place the server in the office again, though it looks odd having a desktop connected to a power outlet and a network cable with two blue LEDs just staring at you...

The laundry looks like a pretty excellent location.
It's pretty central to the main rooms you might need connectivity to.
A shelf/cupboard above say the dryer with some equipment in it would get a bit hotter that in another room but that's not really a problem unless your dryer is some heat beast from hell (my damned dishwasher heats the place more).
Also how often does a dryer duct leak/break?
Shit happens sometimes but that's not a reason to put equipment in a living room or something like that in the 1 / 10,000 chance.

The closet is another alternative but it probably has ZERO ventilation which would put you in the same situation as the laundry room except with probably no power.

Is it out of the question to build a small room into the garage and put it in there with a door and lock and ventilation?

Obviously a door and a lock to keep prying eyes off it, and to prevent some jackshit from walking into your garage and ripping something off.

Physically the laundry room is your best bet, but Dryer heat and the threat of water would seriously make me reconsider putting anything in there.

So, we've put in the paperwork to buy the house.... Over the next four to six months we get to have our little house build from the ground up....

I kinda like the idea behind putting up a thing in the garage, and I could run a cable into the laundry room for wireless networking....

Any idea of whether or not I'm going to be able to convinve them to have me supply the materials to bring down the cost, or is it going to be all or bust?
