It's been a few years since my German classes, but I'm studying the Mössbauer effect and would like to know how to properly pronounce it. I'm thinking Murs boy er, I know that ö is pronounced like 'ur', but I'm not at all confident with the au dipthong. Can anyone confirm that it's the same as 'eu', pronounced 'oy'?
The Ö is more like like the Er in "Err...no". But you cut it off before the r hits. English speakers have a hell of a hard time getting this right though, guess it's because that sound just doesn't exist in your inferior language :P
Eu would be 'oy', you got that right. Au ain't the same though. It's more like the the ou in house

Heh. I never understood why so many people took Spanish instead of German in high school. German is much more fun and it's loads easier to learn as a primary English speaker.
Awesome, thanks. I have to give a presentation on the Mössbauer effect, and really didn't want to mispronounce it in front of a bunch of PhDs, professors, and such.
The ö sound is simliar to an o sound but you round the lips when you make it. Also you make the vowel from the front of the mouth not the back like an o. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help.

Ö sounds very similar to the eu in French "fleur". The Swedish "nörd" is pronounced very similar to "nerd". And means the same thing.
[baʊ] is the phonetic spelling for bauer - the bow of a ship, not a bow ([boʊ]) and arrows.
