Sooooo, there have been some developments since the other Dragon Age thread was locked long ago, and the most important one is this:

The release date is [strike]October 20th[/strike] November 3rd in North America and November 6th in Europe.

[strike]Apparently, 'Dragon Age: Origins will simultaneously ship the PC, X-Box 360 and Playstation 3 versions on this date.'[/strike]
Dragon Age: Origins will [now] be released on November 3rd in North America and November 6th in Europe on the Xbox 360® videogame entertainment system and PC. The PLAYSTATION®3 version will follow later in November.

edit: yes folks, the game has been pushed back a few weeks. D: See page 32. Thanks Sabo.

I dunno, why is the trailer godawful?

Furthermore, why do you think that the game is going to be bad?

It's awful because they don't like the music. Are we really going to have this conversation again? Whenever Dragon Age is mentioned someone always has to bring up the trailer and complain. Every time. It's just a trailer, guys, come on! You're not going to hear Manson during the actual cutscenes. Neckbeards!

And October should be a good month for RPGs. Alpha Protocol and this? I won't know what to do with all my time.

I don't really want to whine about the music, I'm just really surprised that they continue to use it after all the burn it received.

Do we have system specs yet? I want to know if my PC can run this game.

Yeah, the marketing campaign for this game is probably one of the worst I've ever seen. The mixture of Marilyn Manson and fantasy is bizarre as hell, it really doesn't make much sense.

I've no clue what to think of this game, so I've knocked it down from a must buy to maybe. Hopefully they'll release some better footage soon and I can knock it back up.

It's going to be running on 360 hardware as well so I wouldn't worry about it. If you can run ME I doubt you'd have problems with this.

I don't like how rough this game looks, graphics-wise. It's all harsh and jagged, like a rock, giving it a sort of "early 2000 PC game" kind of vibe. I guess that might be intentional, but it's not appealing to me.

It's reminds me of Ladyhawke's use of 80s music.

Yeah, I really think that the choice of music is simply to proclaim that this game is the new shit. In fact, one could argue that the Manson song is uniquely qualified for that purpose.

I agree Kagera, some gameplay movies would be nice.

A trailer is supposed to sell you on the game. That's what it's for. What does the trailer show me? Not something that looks to be the spiritual successor to Baulder's Gate. What it is showing me is totally sweet violence, some titties, and Marilyn Manson.

I think this was the first really good trailer/footage I've seen from the game. Yeah, the Manson song was quite silly, but it was very good otherwise.

Edit: I am, of course, talking about the one they showed at the EA press conference, not that abomination on the site.

Which appeals to the people they're actually targeting. And you should be smart enough, we all should be, to know that's not actually how the game plays. We don't run around slapping titties and stabbing dudes while Manson and half a dozen other artists play in the background. We're not 12 year old kids who don't know any better. We can look up the other trailer, or the long demonstrations of the game which showed plenty of gameplay, or read some fucking previews.

I'd rather we did that and talked about the actual game instead of the fucking music in that fucking trailer.

I think Bioware owes me a free copy after sitting through their emo thrash trailers designed to hook the 13 year old Halo crowd.

I'm also not sure about the ethics of marketing to an under-17 crowd if it's a mature game.

Also not that the new tagline is 'An epic tale of violence, lust, and betrayal'.

They are seriously hammering home the adultness of this game (omg lust!) but the insistence on showing nothing but violence (omg violence!) and the inclusion of angst rock isn't really helping.

edit: don't get me wrong though, if it will be 70% as good as Baldur's Gate II, it'll still be the best RPG since Baldur's Gate II.

In addition, I'm not sure that I could really get into a traditional "click on action bar" RPG again after Mass Effect. The game just felt so right in it's combat model.

EDIT I wonder if that's why they're going for the LOL WE HAVE ADULT CONTENT, trying to play down the old-school control system

Thing is, Dark Alliance was a very good simple version of D&D imho, make a guy, kill some stuff, get some loot.

But this is supposed to hold up to BG2, so we need to just ignore the marketing and pray the game refelcts the promise. Having seen it in action I think it will.

It's going to be pause and issue orders, like BG was. And like ME was as well really, I mean you press and hold the spacebar and tell them what to do. Difference here is that at least we'll have the option of an overhead isometric perspective, which should make issuing orders a LOT more convenient than it was in ME.

I was thinking more in terms of the "rush up to mans, chop at each other" model. If it managed to pull off a Jedi Outcast-esque swordfighting model that lets you get down and dirty, I'd be 100% down for the game no matter how much I wonder if the trailer department wears all black and cuts themselves.

But if we're going back to Baldur's Gate 2 style of sending the mans in to chop chop, I dont know... I feel like games have evolved, and there could be a lot more interactivity.

I don't think it was meant to be hilarious intentionally. It is some crazy marketing person's way of selling the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate to console gamers. It's insulting to both the game and console gamers.

Just look at the new website. The loading progress bars are blood running down a sword impaling a decapitated head. OMG extreme violence! That'll sell the game.

I'm still looking forward to the game, despite the marketing. I trust that beneath the new image it really will be the spiritual successor to BG with a deep story and excellent gameplay. Hopefully we'll see a lot more gameplay footage this week. The videos a few months ago were very BG-ish.

Well the thing is BG is not an action RPG. Sure, games have evolved, but you don't see more interactivity in current strategy games, do you? It's part of the genre. What you gain in 'interactivity', you generally lose in strategics and tactics.

Well I suspect the combat's going to be taking a more strategic bent as opposed to the more action-ey route that ME took. The whole spell combinations thing plays into that as well, as does the isometric viewpoint.

Plus first or third person melee combat is really hard to get right unless you're focussing the development of your game completely around that. So if it came down to that choice, I'd prefer they go with making it strategic instead.

I think the combat looks great but my god the cut scenes are horribly ugly (assuming that is what is in the trailers).

Thankfully I can get past that if the combat does turn out to be good. I'm sure the setting will be extremely generic but Bioware generally writes some pretty good stories so that will be good enough for me.

The third-person part of the last gameplay video made it look MMO-ish, with hotbars and cooldown timers. The player could still jump between characters though, or zoom out to an isometric-like view to click-drag and command the whole party just like in the old Infinity Engine games.

What astounds me is the disparity in quality between the trailers for DA, and the trailers for both ME2 and TOR. You really get a sense of appropriate in-universe adventure and excitement from the latter two.

These are mostly third-person, but sometimes the people running the demos zoom out to control the whole party. The Red Cliffs videos show a bit of the way spells combine. The mage casts an ice spell on a party member so he can fight inside a fire without taking damage.

They aren't. Well Takyris said he wasn't a fan of them anyway, but that basically he thinks that marketing's trying to appeal to the Halo Fanboys who ordinarily wouldn't look at anything not sci-fi.

    Or something like that.

Man I don't know, this marketing doesn't make any sense to me either.
