Got the call from my gf that she found her a little bit ago. Had her for about six months Out of the two I had, Serenity was always the more playful and curious one, as she would climb up my hand and not freak out when I picked her up as much as River She also liked to get out of the cage and explore the top of the dresser I have the cage on. the only thing I noticed different in the last few days was that she seemed to be loosing fur on the top of her head.
My question is, is there something I didn't spot, should have done differently? My work schedule changed, so I haven't been as attentintve as before, but I try to make sure they get out of the cage. And it really, really sucks because today I ran out without checking on them.
And what do I do with River? She's the more skittish one, prefering to just be in the corners of the cage, and I'm afraid this will end up making her sick as well. Should I get another rat? Right now, my gut is telling me to just set her free, because I don't know if I can/want another pet.
Well, don't set her free. Abandoning a pet is illegal in some areas, plus it's irresponsible.
My advice to you is, don't beat yourself up about this. It's not your fault your rat died - it just happens. Especially with rodents. If you're really worried about contamination, call a vet and ask if River is at risk.
Anyway, I'm really sorry for your loss. No matter how tiny the animal, losing a pet always hurts.

Really sorry to hear it, noir. Rats are hard to lose, if only because they are so fragile.
You can try to socialize River a bit more, try and coax her out with treats and such. Doting a bit never hurt a rat. She might get lonely, being an only rat, so keep it in mind.
I don't mean to sound cold here, but rats die. They do not have long lifespans. If you have an issue with pets passing away then rats are not for you. Cancer is common enough that you should expect it. I'm not entirely sure cancer was at fault here, but I still wouldn't pin you with the fault.
Typically the best solution for your other rat would be to get another rat. But in your case I'm not so sure you should start the cycle. Maybe see if you can find someone else with rats that you can give yours to?
I know, it sucks losing a pet, but don't take it so hard, there most likely wasn't anything you could of done.

Thank you, Rubacava!
