I've never been a huge Metroid fan, but I'm vaguely interesting in getting back into the series.
I have the original game and Super Metroid. I have a PS3, GBA, and a Gamecube. What can I get that's good?
Zero Mission for the GBA is a remake of the first, and the closest thing to Super Metroid since... Super Metroid.
Metroid Fusion for the GBA has similar mechanics to Super but a very different structure. It's a lot of fun as long as you don't mind a more linear, action-oriented game.
Metroid Prime for the GC is brilliant. Get it. Or, if you ever plan on getting a Wii, hold off until August 24 and get the Metroid Prime Trilogy, which updates the game with widescreen and Wii controls, and includes parts 2 and 3 as well (neither of which are as good in my opinion, but which I certainly wouldn't turn down if offered to me as part of a collection).
I would start with Fusion, its linear nature makes it a good introduction to the series.
I disagree, I think Zero Mission is very representative of what you can expect in a Metroid game. Fusion is nice but a new player will be a little lost in terms of story and mechanics, and it's also pretty difficult, relatively speaking.
I mean nothing against your recommendation. Both would probably serve just fine, I'd just personally recommend ZM first.
If you've never played Super Metroid all the way through yet, I'd start with that. Going back to SM after playing Zero Mission makes it feel really dated.
Super Metroid also has better graphics. The artwork is far better and the whole thing feels a lot more varied.
Really, Super Metroid's controls aren't QUITE as nice as those in Zero Mission, but it's such a minor factor that it's easily overlooked within ten minutes or so.

I still love how attached people seem to get to that baby metroid in Super Metroid. No text, no voice, just a small scene or two, and for some reason, people actually get emotionally attached to the "little" guy.
Hell, to this day, when I play that area, I still swell with rage.

People also seem to forget that he showed up at the very end of Metroid II, and honestly he was just as cute there.
Well, as cute as a baby alien parasite on a monochrome handheld can be, anyway.

It's not that Zero Mission has bad graphics, it's just that at the SNES's native resolution, they had a lot more room for detail, and they had their fucking A-list spriters on it.

Someone needs to come up with a metroid version of Neko. I'd run it 24/7.

Not so much forget as much as never played/finished. But yes, he was adorable. Those little chirps and whatnot.
Metoid: Other M honestly looks good from my perspective, other than the name that is. I mean, its a trailer, from early development, at least 6 months before it'll even be near to being released. Take what you can get. Voice Acting is always ... awkward.
I'm honestly fine with Samus having a voice though. Its okay. She has vocal chords too. Link on the other hand ... I think he's just mute. A left-handed mute hero of time.
The action fits considering Samus' alleged physical training and whatnot...
She was always considered some kickass bounty hunter who could turn any situation to her immediate advantage by beating the living hell out of every living creature in her vicinity, but she never actually threw a punch before. Which of course would be vastly inferior to shooting them, but acrobatics + cyber-suit strength + Samus' gun = very efficient and bounty hunter-esque.
I expect the game to be called Metroid: Mother before this is done...
Also, to remove any chance of sibling pairings with Samus, I present a little part of a manga considered canon by Nintendo:
For those who do not wish to read the manga, Ridley's forces kill everyone except Samus
12 pages by the way, so be warned.
Also remember to read right to left. Not all of you appear to be anime junkies so I felt it necessary to remind you.
The biggest thing though is to not take too much from this. Its a preview of a preview. Its nothing but a first glimpse at a work in progress. Don't brand the game as good or bad until you at least know how its going to be played. Bah.
If I had a pet Metroid, I'd take it out to the park to feed on random passers-by, and then I would keep their corpse-dust-ash in a jar. I'd then keep stacks of these jars in my garage for when I feel like bragging.
Also, I seem to remember some guy in blue power armor from way back in the old Nintendo Power comics. He followed Samus around but he wasn't so much of a sidekick as a pirate kill stealer and comic relief. I forgot his name but he was a fun character. Especially since he left most of the heavy lifting up to Samus.

Houston.
I always wonder who that one guy is in Super Metroid that is sitting there dead with the little bugs on him after a mini Kraid.

His name was Houston. He was also a white guy with red hair and a suit identical to Samus' aside from the color. Despite this seemingly contrary statement, I honestly believe that guy to be Houston. Also, (from the trivia of the Metroid wikia) Metroid: Other M might be a reference to the closing statement of the original Metroid. "THE GALAXY MAY BE INVADED BY THE OTHER METROID. PRAY FOR A TRUE PEACE IN SPACE"
What does Samus spend her bounty money on? She must be rich as Oprah after seven games of blasting zoomers and Space Pirates.

Just saw the trailer, and frankly I'm stoked. I like all the Metroids, even the Primes, and this just seems to be the next step for Metroid. It's done 2D side scroller, it's done 3D FPS, a third person 3D side scroller-esque view actually seems like a logical next step to me.
If this has Ninja Gaiden's depth of combat, combined with Metroid's famous exploration and power up system, I'd be sitting in front of my Wii for days after it releases.
I love, love the Prime games; the first one is what I considered the best game for the gamecube, and the other two were strong on their own, but this one looks to blow these out of the water stylistically.

No offense, but I find it kind of amusing how you say "even the Primes" as though it were controversial or unusual. It's a bit like saying "I like all the Grand Theft Auto games, even III". :P

Actually, reading these forums sometimes, you would think it was controversial or unusual. While I think most people did like the Primes, they are polarizing at times. There are some serious diehard Metroid fans who would like to forget they exist, and they can be vocal. I get your drift though, it was sort of odd how I worded that.

Okay. We say maybe thirty seconds tops of actual gameplay. From what do you determine that it is 2.5D (side-scrolling with 3D elements)?
I said side scroller-esque. I actually don't think it will have a forced plane of movement (the video would support that), but if you look at some of the backgrounds in the video, they do look to have some defined direction to them. Think LittleBigPlanet with rotation and a couple extra axis of guided movement.
It just doesn't look free roaming third person to me. I could be completely wrong, because as you said, it's not a lot of footage (and most of it is Samus kicking ass), but the movement overall seemed to be constrained somehow, which a free movement system wouldn't be.

True. I'm just saying not to assume too much. It does appear to be that way, however.
My big question, though, is where this takes place. Has Samus been there before? Can we expect to see something we recognize (besides Mother Brain in a cinematic whose origin is as of yet unknown)? Will ther be Chozo? I hope so. I like Chozo statues.

Eh, they're an extremely vocal minority. Most people acknowledge at least Prime 1 as being the brilliant game that it was, and part 3 was generally regarded favorably (though time has dulled the initial hype somewhat and it doesn't seem to get as much slavish devotion as the first one does). The only Prime game that tends to be controversial is Echoes.

Echoes just wasn't as fun as the others. It was too straightforward. It was too short. Walking through darkness while constantly taking damage was not fun. Plus, I never really liked Dark Samus.

I would agree with this. Echoes was still a fun game, and I beat it and enjoyed it, but these reasons are pretty much why I would grade Echoes below both the original and Corruption. The gimmick just wasn't that fun. Corruption felt much more like the original Prime to me.
