Still working on Chapter 2 here, but I'm really starting to enjoy the combat. I've been playing on an SDTV since yesterday which has taken some getting used to.
I must be the only one who thought it looked like a semi-generic UE3 game.
It's a fine-enough looking game, but I'm really curious what the hell most people here are on when they're referring to it as one of the best-looking console games out there
Because uh...it's kinda not

Well, I know that (from reading this thread).
Just while playing it I saw textures and stuff that remind me of, for example, Gears of War. Like the brick buildings and whatnot.

The graphics and artstyle are coherent. EVERYTHING is designed, every tiny little corner looks handcrafted and is filled with detail.
The overall feel and package plus the beautiful artstyle make it stand out.
It may not be the technically best, but it is certainly along the most beautiful.
Yeah, it has a great art style, and everything is meticulously detailed, but that comes along with a somewhat stuttering frame rate. I'd rather have a smoother frame rate with less detail, personally.

Frame rate /= how good it looks visually.
Sometimes I wish the frame rate was a bit better, but it's there when I need it and all other times I can eat up all those tasty visuals.
When I ran across that bridge and saw it for the first time, my jaw hit the fucking floor. They could have easily made it just this big stone castle and be done with it...but no, they went balls out making it gothic as shit with those towers. The architecture on that thing is nothing short of amazing.

When you
come out of the cave and see the castle for the very first time, way waaaaaaay in the background, with the lightning storm above it and the music playing, I just let Gabriel stand there to admire the view thinking "Holy shit,I'll have to traverse all of that, won't I?"

I'm half glad I had to start all over again, just so I can just take all this shit in a second time.

It took me an hour to figure out where to go in the Titan Graveyard (not the one with the Titan, the later one). I had no idea I was supposed to jump onto an island with a giant hand on it. Dur.

I guess Dave Cox wasn't kidding when he said both versions were more or less identical. This is a pretty interesting read:

I feel kind of bad. A lot of you talking about how much they were amazed by the art and the places you went to and.. I.. wasn't. Like, I liked them, but I wasn't constantly going 'Woooooow'. I feel like I could've enjoyed it more.
Tearing down the windows to let the sunlight in for the entryway fight was just so awesome. I loved playing keep away with the vampires, and then it gets cloudy... I am also loving that the enemy makeup now is totally in the Castlevania direction. Skeletons, worgs, animated armor, vampires, ghouls, it's all here. Then the boss that I could swear was a Diablo 1 nod. It's more awesome than my tiny mind can take.
So I'm reading now that, even with both discs installed, visiting earlier areas when I'm (story-wise) on disc two I still have to switch back to disc one? I thought they fixed this problem before release?
According to an interview I read, they wanted to have it so you could disable the disc swapping by installing to the hard drive, but the Microsofts stepped in and denied them since it violated standards or some crap.

Beginning of Chapter VIII spoilers.
Is...is the castle as big as it looks?
Yes.
Whoever asked "Is there a castle in this?".
Yes there is. OH BOY, there is.
My Backloggery
YES! I laughed out loud!
Also, anyone catch the Day of the Tentacle reference?

Also the overt shininess to a lot of things.

I disagree, but fair enough, I suppose
So very goood!
Oh and the skeletons. My god, the skeletons in this game.
I do hope they aren't riding motorcycles.
Already tried that. I got some Light Magic and it wasn't healing me, probably because he can't take damage in this phase.
I ended up finally managing to beat it by doing two things:
1) Redoing the fight so I started the phase at full health
The sad thing is I beat the first two phases in a single try.

Are you playing on PS3 or 360?
I'm on 360 and basically whenever I'm not in combat, the frame rate gets pretty damn choppy just running around exploring
In the Mass Effect 2 I learned that I end up getting stuck in completely different parts of games than other people
I was beating things on the first try that took others 20 tries, and taking 20 tries to beat things people nailed on their first try.
Anyway, this is what I get for assuming I had to use
I think I'm in chapter 3.

That sucks pretty bad if so.
It's not that big of a deal.

It kind of is, actually
Not during the first runthrough of the game, though
Unless you're jumping from late game to early game and back constantly for some odd reason.
Even then it'd be hard to blame on the game.

You can't see why someone wouldn't want to do the challenges in order?
Okay, sure.
If you're starting to do them at all you're going to have to do them all, so just do them in order.
And if you want to jump all over the maps for some odd reason, do it per disc if it's that big of a deal.
Complaining about disc swapping is the most petty fucking thing.

Konami's original stance on this was "install disc one" and you'll be good
Guess MS stepped in at the last second and no reviews or anything bothered to mention it
