Vista Sleep Mode + Network connection

Is there a way to keep my connection going when the computer is in sleep mode? It seems to turn off my NIC (I notice my IM application and IRC have to reconnect), even though I unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

e: Also have "Maximum Performance" set for the NIC in Power Management.

    When the computer is put into sleep mode, all programs and services and hardware shut down except for the RAM.
