All the good ones that are out there tend to be expensive. Likewise, a good majority of the free ones either take weeks to complete a 60-minute AVI file, or the end quality is incredibly poor.

My suggestion is to take a look around www.doom9.org. They've got some great guides for converting various files to DVD-format, and their forums are really really helpful if/when you run into trouble.

However, I do have some suggestions. You can try TMPGEnc; a lot of people swear by it, but I've never really had much luck with it. I always had much better luck with DVD2SVCD. Now, you'll still need an encoder; TMPGEnc will work with this (I find it works better through DVD2SVCD than running it alone), or there are other free encoders you can pick up. QuEnc works pretty well too.

If this is just a one-time thing, pick up TMPGEnc and give it a try. Or possibly even just pick up Nero; it's got a rudimentary AVI conversion program for burning DVD's. But if you're interested in doing this more often, do some research on Doom9.

Buy a cheap DVD player that will play AVI files directly. It will save you a heap of time and hassle.
