COP for DS: a generic game with promise

Ubisoft's COP: The Recruit. Recently unveiled in Nintendo's E3 conference, it has the most generic name and story possible. The plot sounds like every game that wants to be GTA but doesn't want the controversy: you do bad things, but it's okay because you're an undercover cop! You're a good guy, honest! What is that, the plot of the Driver games? It's another "me too" effort on a system not really meant for that type of game.

So why is it I think it looks kind of cool?

What do we have in this trailer...first of all, it's doing its best to be a fully 3D GTA, and it's not doing that poorly. Rockstar threw up their hands and made an overhead view game (which incidentally turned out to be a lot of fun, if not a big seller), but Ubi's trying to go where they didn't.

We see car missions and on foot missions. Lots of pop in is briefly visible around :22. Map/PDA on the bottom screen just like Chinatown Wars. It gets interesting at :29 which makes me think of a low res RE4. Shooting, putting out fires. Some kind of squad based mission? Watching security cameras in a casino! Monster truck, running, shooting...boating, and at the end we get a glimpse of ambulance driving.

Anybody else see any potential for a fun game?

Talking points from the press kit:
When will the games be released?
October 2009

Describe the gameplay.
C.O.P. THE RECRUIT’s gameplay takes advantage of a revolutionary game engine on the DS enabling us to display an open-world, breathing with life and in full 3D glory. On top of that, our streaming technology not only means that you will play your game very smoothly (60 frames per second), but throughout your adventure, you will experience no loading times whatsoever. This is truly a breakthrough for a DS title and the gameplay will reflect that: pick any car you want, race through New York City, cross the city on foot, go inside buildings, use your PDA to install road blockades, shoot down gangs – all without loading times. You have more than 6 miles² and 20 hours of gameplay (not counting free roaming missions) at your disposal.

What are the interactions you have with the Nintendo DS?
C.O.P. THE RECRUIT features various touch gameplay which enable you to take control over the city: use your stylus to dispatch SWAT teams or install road blockades, launch SWAT assaults with the voice control “ALL TEAMS GO!” All of this can be done from your in-game PDA, which gives you unprecedented control of the city, and therefore an extraordinary advantage over your foes.

I'm going to be keeping an eye on it.

I think it has to be stated repeatedly, if only because of the severity of the crime, but Cop: The Recruit is a new low in video game naming conventions.

I guess the art is kinda cool, and I like that they trying new things with 3D on the DS, but I still have my doubts. Is Ubisoft developing it or what?

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.

My brother has a DS and insists on yelling OBJECTION at it. I want to strangle him with his intestine every time he does it, when I visit home on holidays.

Heh, I saw that too, hopefully there's a button press. How timely, just when Microsoft reveals voice commands on the 360 too.

    It's a kid thing, I guess.
