Final Fantasy XIV - Why does it have a number?

edited June 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
Ok so my first post, I wear a fire proof suit so let the flaming begin.

Probably more of a rant than a debate, but I encourage others to share/rant their opinion also.

I was already outraged the first time around, when the original FF MMO came out. I waited many a lonely night for the announcement of the new Final Fantasy game, expecting something to blow previous FF's out of the water... and after all that waiting and speculation of FFXI when it was finaly announced to be a MMO I was devestated. Why didn't they just call it FF Online! Leave the numbers to the true FF's. It is not like this is a strange concept for SquareEnix, as they have made non numbered FF games before, FF tactics for one, FF chocobo tales (god forgive if that one became a numbered game), FF Crystal Chronicals, and so on. So why is it they feel the need to insert into their long line of numbered, completable games, yet a second MMO. I am not saying a FFMMO is a horrible idea but especially, with the not very success of XI, why would they allow these games completly not in the style of the rest of the numberd FF's in which you are the main hero and you go through an epic story fighting epic battles, to mar their order with a grind fest, in which unless you spend the majority of your lifes hours in you end up an insignificant prong in a giant clockwork that is the MMO.

Thats about it for my rant now, but feel free to argue against, rant in your own right, etc. I welcome it.

Although this really isn't the appropriate thread, FFXI was huge in Japan, and a moderate success in the U.S.

Also, FFXII was loosely modeled off FFXI.

Well since this is my first post, and this feels Debate worthy, Discourse worthy to me, I posted it here >.<

but, yes I am aware of FFXI's success in Japan, however I still don't think that it deserved a number. FFXII may have been modeled off of the MMO but at least it still fell into the numbered style, of you being the main characters, going through an epic story, with some kind of true culmination and end.

    Maybe, just maybe...

Square conciders FFXI to be a true FF.

    And maybe, just maybe...

They also concider FFXIV to be a true FF.

    Gasp, shock.

Well, if you had played it, you would also know that FFXI had three storylines, with genuine depth, including many of the avatars having backgrounds as well.

My question was not , do they Consider it to be a true FF but rather why would they. they have a general, and i mean very loose general concept of what a final fantasy game should be, based on all their previous games, and even the games that didn't turn out to be MMO's they also have the knowledge that some stories and games they want to tell, just don't fit, hence the Final Fantasy name, but no number. Im curious as to what would lead them to give the MMO's numbers.

well turns out I did play it, and i played it for quite a while actually. Yes I agree the stories had depth and there was some backgrounding, however it had nothing compared to the true numbered games, and because it being an MMO it was set to that style of incredibly long, drawn out play.

How did it not compare to the other games? You grind and fight bosses. Only this time with other people.

phew, it seems I hit a chord with the late night western posters/mid day eastern posters. its tough argueing alone >.<

as for how it didn't compare you simply had to look at it in more depth. Alot of the best FF's had no real grinding, the grinding was disguiesed and hidden with the distances between towns having you level by necessity of just getting somewhere. and it wasn't always about bosses, there were so many intricate detailed and layered substories as well as main stories, and all in all every other final fantasy game besides the MMO just had a feel to it.

well I enjoyed X, more so than 8 or 9, the combat system was superb as it allowed for switching between all your party, one thing i never quite understood before, as why you are traveling with 6 or 9 people yet only 3 or 4 would ever stand around and do anything :P

of course 10 is no 7 and definatly no 6 of which i beleive to be the pinnacle of the series.

I'm referring to the massive grinding required by the game towards the end.

really? i didn't need to do anygrinding, I think a lot of it depends on how you decided to go through the level grid. i did alot of jumping between peoples paths. that and probably didn't feel like grinding even if it was, cause i was never leveling for the sake of leveling, I was getting all the summons and walking back through every area to see if i missed something, or something new is there, much like i do with just about any RPG just before endgame.

probably comes down to opinion on what is considered grinding.

Who cares that they put a number after the Final Fantasy, When the games reach Final Fantasy 50, nobody will care that the game was different from the other FF games.

hahah the whole if its the "final" fantasy why are there still more of them thing?

ya i got over that a while ago, mainly A) it came out of Engrish and sounded good to japanese and b) since none of the games, with the exception of 10-2 actually take place in the same world they can all technically be the final fantasy for that world >.<

but ya that was a point of stress a while ago

Your grasp of Final fantasy's name origin is weak.

Aside from the obvious catchyness of the name, there was also the fct that square was litterally going bankrupt after producing several mediocre titles. The last game that ehy were able to make, the one which would make or break the company was called final fantasy because it carried with it the future of the company.

    O_o

It was called that because Sakaguchi planned on retiring after creating it.

Edit: Same thing with above. As in they're also right.

I hope they gave a bonus to whoever green lighted that project.
Anyway I think they gave XI a number just so the fans would view it as a legitimate FF and not just brush it off as another spin-off (though we buy those too).
Alternately: Because they felt like it.
