So I got new laptop and wireless network. I got windows media center up and running and my 360 can see my laptop and I can watch all my movies that I have encoded to the Zune format however I want to to watch my divx encoded stuff. I know you gotta do some messing around but does anybody have a simple way of doing this and getting it setup?
TL;DR I want to watch Divx movies on my 360 from my laptop.
As far as I know, you just had to download the dashboard update from... last fall I think? That included DivX and XviD playback capabilities.
This. If it doesn't work there's an optional media update and the easiest way to find that update is to attempt to play a video, it should come up and say you need to download the optional media update (not the exact wording but you get the point).
Also of note, if you find the videos work then later on they stop working saying you need to download the update even though you've downloaded the update, just re-download it and it should clear it up. Had that issue last week.

I wasn't able to get the media update prompt when trying to play through the 360's media centre. I had to share the videos via Windows Media Player, go to "Video Library" on my 360, and try to play it from there.
If I used Windows Media Centre on my 360, it wouldn't give me the option to update.. it just wouldn't play.
I know this might not be the ideal solution for you, but I've found that, for HD video, streaming remains a problem, so I just bought a 16GB USB flash memory key, and I just transfer the videos I want to watch onto that, and plug it in the front of my 360.
I used to use TVersity to stream+transcode most video formats on my 360, but these days, I mostly use it for streaming music (for some reason, it works better for me than Windows Media Player.
With the USB key, most DivX and XviD standard-def videos play well, and for HD, MP4 videos also play well. I use GOTSent to convert downloaded MKVs (the most common HD format on torrent sites) to MP4: it only re-encodes when needed (usually re-encoding AC3 audio to AAC, leaving H264 video as-is) so it's usually pretty fast.
For some reason Media Center has a real hard time functioning correctly on my 360, but streaming stuff using the 360 interface works fine. The first time I tried to play a DIVX file it prompted me to install a codec update, it's been working fine ever since.
TVersity is a program that I've used for a very long time on my XP machine to serve content to my network, including my Xbox and PS3. It recodes everything into a playable format for whatever platform you're browsing from. It also has some neat features to do with video podcasts. I highly recommend it but if you use it you will need to disable or figure out how to get WMP11/Zune to work with it.

Ah, see I don't have media centre so I was just sharing via Windows Media Player and then via Connect360 on my Mac so I got the prompt.

I haven't had any problems with HD either.
