I'm changing jobs in a week or so from now and I'm looking to queue up some books in my Barnes & Noble wish list that will help me become proficient at my job. I'm looking for some publisher recommendations specifically - specific book recommendations wouldn't be frowned upon though! - otherwise I am just going to buy Cisco Press books. The subjects I will be reading up on include MPLS, QoS & TCP/IP specifically. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

IT is one of those careers that you can get into from a variety of different paths, so this might be either a really good suggestion or totally below your level.

Either way, I recently finished the book Code by Charles Petzold. Does a great job of explaining some of the physical/mathematical theories that are underlying lots of CS/IT topics.

Basically it's the first two years of an EE or CE degree in a single book. If you have either of those degrees, it's redundant, but if you don't then it's a great resource.

Don't have either of those degrees (want to go back for an EE) so I'll give it a look. The description definitely makes it sound like a good read so it's queued. :D

For a publisher recommendation, have a look at O'Reilly. They have a few books that are disappointing, but for the most part, they publish fairly high quality books.

O'Reilly book on TCP/IP administration. I can't vouch for this book specifically since I've never read it, but I would recommend taking a look to see if you think it might be helpful.

Are you going to take any of the cert tests? If so, the press books are the way to go since they will cover everything on the exams.

Not sure about MPLS, but the Cisco Press QoS book is really good stuff.
