Buying first car from Craigslist

So I'm buying my first car, on Craigslist.

I'm in Canada btw.

What do I need to know? Paperwork wise I mean what do I need to get from the guy when I buy the car (I remember an old episode of Full House where some guy bought some girl a car but it didn't come with paperwork and it was stolen :P)?

I can take it to a local friend/mechanic I know to check out and the guy's car I'm looking into (the ad) says that it's a decent car with new parts and such.

Help! I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

Do Canadian cars have VINs that can be looked up on Carfax? That's a good start. Also, do you have the entire total of money needed for purchase, or will you be getting a loan?

Definitely write up a simple contract. "I, kathos, am purchasing this ___car___ for the sum of $$$$$ from ___Craigslist Guy___."

Something like this ought to specify the vehicle by VIN just to be safe. However, this isn't totally necessary, as you will have the title to the car signed over.

The above post was written as if you're going to be buying a car in America.

Make sure there are no liens on the vehicle.

yeah make sure there is a clean title otherwise you could be paying off this guy's loan as well as what he charges.

    What are you buying BTW?

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that its legally mandatory in Canada to get a car history report, and with good reason. You could end up buying a stolen one, or overpaying for a car if it has been in an accident you dont know about.

Get the VIN, get a carfax report.
