Let's Play SimVikings [KING OF DRAGON PASS]

King of Dragon Pass is a 1999 computer game published by A Sharp. Set in the fictional world of Glorantha, it depicts the lives and fortunes of one of several barbarian clans, settling the untamed lands of Dragon Pass over the course of several decades. The clans bear some similarities, such as fyrds and lawspeakers, to the Iron Age Nordic people.
The player controls the seven-member clan ring leading the clan, providing leadership to the clan in all aspects of its life from rituals to diplomacy. The ring can make two macro-level decisions per each of the five seasons in the Gloranthan year. Random events are drawn from a pool of hundreds and are often influenced by previous decisions. In battle, the player determines the goals and preparations, and possibly chooses the actions of his nobles at pivotal moments.
To succeed, a player must balance the various needs of survival and prospering, as well as manage the problems presented by the setting or the clan individuals - a lack of food might be solvable by clearing more farmland, but when the forest responds by sending a talking fox to urge leaving the trees alone, a wrong choice could bring the clan hunters to war with their environment. Likewise, should a member of the clan act in a selfish and foolish manner, action needs to be taken to stabilize and defuse the situation, if necessary.
And what does all that mean, exactly?
It means that King of Dragon Pass is a game that combines the best of city building, god sim and turn based strategy with Viking bullshitary. In game terms, it means we can ride dinosaurs.
And how will this work?
My last KoDP LP failed because I relayed too much on user input. This time I'm just gonna play whenever, and subsequently post pictures, while you watch in envious awe. HOWEVER, I do want the loving people of SE++ to feel a part of the game, and so you'll get the chance to determine some critical starting characteristics about our viking clan (whether or not we use slaves, for instance). You can also tell me if you want me to do stuff you think is important, like raid another tribe or explore a bit of the map, and I may graciously grant that request, as long as it befits the clan as a whole.
Okay, I'll bite. Now how 'bout some pictures in the meantime?

Right. This is out tribe:
Love it, live it, raid it for cows. Commence the game!
First off, our magic. By assigning it to each field we're basically giving it a little boost, improving and enhancing it. What we need more of is cows, as they are the basic food unit (and currency, and sacrificial tribute) in the game. We should invest in war because, come on, we're vikings.
Next up, reorganizing the Clan Ring. Those'll be the eight dudes at the bottom of the screen. Right now they're just randomly assigned, but we'll fix that. The guy on the far left will be our Clan Leader, so we better make sure the lucky guy or gal can lead and fight. It is also vitally important that he worships our main deities, Orlanth the Father and Elmal the Hunter. Having a Clan Leader who worships a different god than that of the clan can lead to some pretty bad events.
From left to right, they are the Clan Leader, Battle Master, Chief Trader, Law Speaker, Farmer and Herder, Trickster, and Healer. Now that they're all in their place, something must be done about the low number of our weaponthanes, our dedicated soldiers. The bedraggled nine who are currently guarding our tula are tired and weary, and we must bolster their numbers as far as we can, to 14.
ahh, our first event!
Runaway slaves, eh? Well, there's only one right thing to do here. Take them for ourselves!
Their suffering... it's delicious. After we're done locking them up and throwing food scraps at them through the bars, we move off. Expecting raiding parties from enemy clans, we improve our defenses by adding a watchtower:
and our prowess in battle by sacrificing to Humkat the Warrior God. Humkat was mighty pleased with our sacrifice, for he has shared with us the secret of Truesword, which makes every weaponthane fight with the power of two men!
What's this? Strange men on horseback, coming to demand the return of their property! We say thee nay!
I guess they didn't like our answer?
Gods preserve us, we are outnumbered! We must exercise caution and engage them only through small skirmishes, during which our goal should be to kill as many of the vile nomads as possible. A liberal use of magic and a sacrifice or two wouldn't hurt either.
Success!
That should teach those bastards that the Stormheart clan is not to be trifled with! But alas, we have lost thanes in the battle. We compensate for our losses, and add some more in case more raids are coming.
But who are mysteriousness horsemen? A little alcohol fueled detective work revealed their origin:
We note the depletion of our goods and food stocks, and make haste to assign more craters and hunters. Unfortunately they cannot do much now, for winter is coming, and when snow and wolves blaze outside men have no power for tracking wild beasts or fiddling with clay.
A grave matter was brought before the clan ring, an accusation of adultery.
The treachery of kin against kin, in whatever capacity, is serious indeed. We must make sure of the matter.
Their families speak for them, but those whose heart lies with the youthes see what they wish to see. Surely, the Gods will guide us.
The Gods have spoken, and declared the two blameless. With higher powers speaking on their behalf, the ring is happy to exonerate them both.
Not a day went by after the trial has ended, and more trouble reared its head. This time, it was the womenfolk who came to complain.
Members of the clan were unsure how to proceed. Some wished to argue with the women and change their minds, but in such a way the matter would be made public. Others thought that ignoring them, or questioning their motives, might be the right answer. But it was the Lawspeaker, who knows the ancient customs through and through, that had come up with a solution to the situation.
They had left the clan hall in peace, but their complaints went unanswered and their moods were soured. And if the mood of a wife is soured, so does the mood of her husband. The clan had become worried. In an attempt to lift their spirits, a cattle raid was sent against our old enemies, the Vanstali.
In Cattle raids, sending an overwhelming force is not the way to go, for we aim not to kill or take spoils, but to make off with cows, sheep and horses before being spotted by patrols. Sending such a raid during the winter season, when the land turns against the men who walk on it, is a dangerous gambit, but one the clan ring felt was worthwhile, despite the consequences of another failure. Luckily, it would seem Elmal was on our side.
But perhaps not for long?
The brazens! The rogues! They dare appeal to our God?! Perhaps hoping to spoil our favor with him, to curse us in his eyes! Alas, there is little we can do in this matter, for to interfere with another clan's heroquest would be to go against all the old ways and traditions given to us by our ancestors.
And thus ends the first year since our arrival to Dragon's Pass. What more shall happen on the next?

King of Dragon Pass sold for $19.95. However, we believe all merchants are now sold out. The CD is cross-platform, so you don’t need to worry about whether your computer is Windows or Macintosh.
If you can’t find a copy we can burn a copy of the CD. The cost is $19.95 (check or PayPal) plus shipping. Please note that we aren’t a retail operation and can’t promise to ship promptly. Contact us (customer-support) if you’re interested.
Download our tour, for Windows (67 MB) or Macintosh (71 MB), which shows you one game year. It is not practical to download the entire game (about 450 MB).
