Need a treasure chest

So, I'm throwing an event this weekend, and I'm looking to get a small lockable chest for it. Nothing terribly ornate, but something I can padlock.

I've been scouring local antique and junk stores, but have found nothing. I'm also wary of buying online since my apartment is difficult to find, and the time factor.

Anyone know any good stores I can go to to find something like this? I live in NYC, so if it's a major chain, I can probably find one.

How big are we talking? Small safe or footlocker?

Maybe try and army/navy surplus store?

Ross/Marshalls/TJ Maxx usually have wooden boxes.

Is this supposed to be functional (ie protecting your stuff from strangers) or functional and decorative?

Small and portable, nothing as big as a footlocker.

Didn't think of a surplus store, that's not a bad idea at all.

The chains I'll take a look at, but I walked into a few and didn't find anything promising.

Mostly functional. It's part of an urban game thing. The final clue is contained within, and it'll be bound with a wordlock. So I want people to solve the riddle and open the padlock to get in the chest, not circumvent it.

In that case, Iceman's probably on the right track. You could use one of these ammo cases -- they come in all sorts of sizes, and are probably fairly secure once you lock them.

    Hideous? Yes.

You can get stuff from a hardware store to really class it up.

Or maybe a small safe from target, or a lockbox? I dont know if thats the type of combination you want but it could be. i got one a few years ago for about $20.

If it's built like an authentic ammo case (or if it is authentic), it can't really be secured. The hinges on the back can slide apart.
