Show me your (multi)tool.

Hi there,

I'm in the market for a multitool, but I haven't much of an idea of what I should be looking for. I had a gander at some of the stuff on Amazon, but there didn't seem to be any stand-out winners. I'm just a College Dude looking for an alternative solution to carrying around a giant tool chest every time I move. The search function didn't return any Multitool topics, so HERE WE ARE.

As far as necessities, I know that I want at least a knife, needlenose pliers, and some Basic Screwdriver Functionality. Other than that, I'm uncertain. Although, after checking out this Beaut' on Amazon, Sexy would be a welcome feature as well.

Anyhoo, just hoping a knowledgeable soul could recommend a few multitool models and why said models have a Tendency to Tickle him o' her.

Much obliged. :)

I think the Leatherman Juice is just about perfect. Not too small, and has just about everything I could need. You can also snag a little holster for it for like $5. If you're wanting to go bigger, I'd suggest the Surge, Charge or the Wave. I've seen my local Walmart with the Surge on clearance for $45, might be the same in your area. I have the Charge, and love it, but it doesn't get as much use as my Juice.

If space is a concern, this is a valid purchase. If you're planning on carrying it around with you, this is a good purchase. If space isn't that much of a problem, and you're not planning on carrying it around with you, you're better off with a $20-$30 tool kit from Home Depot that you just keep in your room. Less likely to be stolen, way better tools (not that a multitool isn't great, don't get me wrong, it's just great in the same way a laptop is: great for a portable tool), and if it does get lost/stolen/whatever, you don't give a shit.

Anyone ever owned a SOG? I was considering getting one myself, and SOG seemed an interesting choice.

Edit: Yes, I did indeed originally spell it SAG, I'm not sure why. I was probably thinking of a sagittal saw from work and it stuck in my head.

I have one on me right now, love it, agree with everything said above. Great multi-tool if you want to easily be able to carry it around.

I once went into a shop looking for a leatherman, and the guy suggested a swisstool

    http://www.swissarmy.com/multitools/Pages/Category.aspx?category=swisstool&

What I like about it is that it can open tools without needing to open the pliers. The problem is that it doesn't flick open as easily as a leatherman.

I have a Leatherman "Super" Tool that I got about 14 years ago that is still going strong. They make some newer and sexier looking ones now but mine is built like a tank, with commensurate heft. I did bend the fuck out of the saw when I jammed it while cutting down a dead tree, but I was able to bend it back into a close approximation of its original shape.

I have a cheap Gerber that I picked up, but really any leatherman or Gerber do the job.

Another recommendation here for the Leatherman Wave. I had mine for about 4 or 5 years now, and it still works great. I had another Leatherman before that; they're great tools.

Realistically any brand name one is good. They get updated every year, so buy a new one.
