the only possible thing i could think of is you could have scoliosis and your whole back is somehow misaligned so much that your ribs are uneven... but i think you would have noticed already

I would suggest that if this were the case, the ribs being out would be the least of your problems.
I'm thinking back to middle/high school science, here, but I thought there was a genetic thing where some people are born with extra ribs. I can't remember if it was possible for it to be uneven or not, though; I have the distinct impression that this wasn't all that unusual.
Sounds like it's not something emergency-ish, though, so you could probably wait until the next time you go in for a physical and ask then.
On a similar note, one side of my ribcage is slightly sunken compared to the other. I assume it's because of bad posture (which I'm working on improving). Anyone else have that?

Yep. The number of ribs can differ from person to person, there's no "regular" number.
does it cause any pain or discomfort? If not, dont worry about it and just ask a doctor the next time you see them.
I have one rib that is folded up underneath the one above it because I caught a kick there once (just the end, you can actually see a heel indentation), and the doctors actually told me they wanted to leave it alone because it wasnt causing me pain, and would certainly be a bitch to try and fix.
1% of the population have a lower rub split, giving the impression of more than one rib. It says this is pretty serious so get it checked out.
A Bifid rib or bifurcated rib is a congenital abnormality occurring in about 1% of the population. The sternal end of the rib is cleaved into two. It is usually unilateral. Effects of this neuroskeletal anomaly can include respiratory difficulties, neurological difficulties, limitations, and limited energy from the stress of needing to compensate for the neurophysiological difficulties.

I doubt it's posture since we can't have been sitting that badly all our lives.

Me too, I'm going to think it's pretty normal, especially as your body isn't symetrical on the inside.
My left ribs stick out of my abdomen as my right doesn't. If I tighten my mid section both sides become the same and none stick out. I've found its gotten better as my core strength and general posture have improved. My chiropractor has looked at it and just said continue to strengthen and even adjusted said rib. The adjustment felt amazing but didn't do too mcuh in the large scheme. I think its cause by too much turning to the right side at work while stocking which has given me a weakness in the left side oblique/abdomen.
I'd reccomend getting it checked out by a doctor if it bothers you and perhaps trying to work it out with exercise.
one rib about halfway down the right side of my rib cage is like, pushed in, or non-existant, or something. i've never had it checked out but it's been there as far back as i can remember noticing it. i've thought about getting it looked at but it's never been a problem, so i haven't bothered.

Nothing else you can do.

My sister said her left side is lower than her right, so maybe it's genetics?
It just freaked me out when I noticed it, and I don't know how it took me over 18 years to see.
