I'm making a presentation with Open Office Impress, and wanted to know if I will be able to open it on a different computer with Microsoft Powerpoint?

when I save my presentation should I just save it as a .ppt file or just keep it as .odp?

Not familar with the international open standard format.

    .ppt is what you want.

You want .ppt unless it's a very recent version of Office. Powerpoint compatibility is probably OO.orgs weakest point, though, it would be wise to try and get someone to open the file in Office before you have to do the presentation and make sure everything works properly.

If you're really stuck, you can run portable OpenOffice:

    http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable

From a flash drive on the computer you're using for the presentation without installing anything, which might just save your ass if it won't open properly in Powerpoint.

Try to use portable OpenOffice. The lat ppt I made in OO has it's formatting mangled by PP.

Unless you're using slide transitions, animation or hyperlinks, I'd just export it as a pdf and view it in full screen mode.

ho, you have no idea the shit that powerpoint will do. its completely random. its magic that it works at all.

but, you can download a ppt viewer from microsoft for free and see how bad:

    best bet:
no animations. just screenshot each slide and then paste the result into a new slide deck. if there are multiple points, just break them into individual slides as graphics. this will be pretty bullet proof.

alternately, you can export to pdf and then hit cntl+L for full screen mode.

Honestly, nobody who is watching your slideshow wants those gimmicky-ass animations and sound effects anyway.

But yes, at the very least, review the exported .ppt in the no-cost Powerpoint Viewer, or bring a copy of OpenOffice with you.

Pretty much this. Also, Open Office 3.1 has better office format saving as does the go-oo branch of open office. Also as another poster mentioned you could simply save as a PDF and use that, it's not as if those animations serve any real purpose other than looking silly.
