Mexicans, puberty and flash mobs [Weeds] SPOILERS

weedsseason5.jpg

So! Season 5 debuted tonight and I was wondering what everyone thought of it.

They see me recappin, they hatin:
SO! Nancy had narrowly avoided death by getting knocked up by the Mexican mafia, Silas split with hot mom and turned 18. Shane started dealing (and having threesomes, the lucky little shit). Andy fucked Doug's Mexican love (but is in love with Nancy) so Doug had her deported. It seemed like Doug was going to kill himself, turns out he was just pulling a David Carridine (too soon?). Celia went through rehab and was abducted by her daughter in Mexico for the ransom money. I think that just about ties things up.

Reaction:
Shane is a fucking teenager now. Awkward (sort of) but brings good tension into the family. Nancy is fucked, though not as fucked as she was. I didn't like how they kept name dropping shit like Facebook and flash mobs (does anyone still do flashmobs that arent commercials?). I didnt like how it ended, but I think this season is going to be good.

    Just finished it and...
Shane and Isabelle as teenagers bugs the hell out of me but it has to happen sometime. I thought it was hilarious when Dean shot down the ransom demand, but then they called all her contacts which felt a little overdone. I'm totally psyched for this season though...

I really hope Doug picks himself up off the mat in this season. I like him as a successful jerkwad, not a sad sack jerk wad.

I always liked this show, but I stopped watching it right before season 1 ended for some reason. I forgot it was even on until I saw Parker on Craig Fergerson. She still looking like the sexiest weed dealer I ever saw.

What season is this one? 4 or 5?

I don't have cable so I always end up buying this show on DVD. I just purchased season 4 and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Do they show the new season 5 episodes anywhere online after the episode airs?

I thought the show was pretty funny last night in that black as midnight fashion. Celia's arc especially with the kidnapping.

Definitely did, but I think in a good way. Its much more dynamic that they actually took the show in another direction and introduced real change into their lives. Otherwise it just wouldnt be realistic (and its toes the line of completely improbable already).

A new direction was certainly necessary, but the past season was way too wild and crazy. Within a year, Nancy is pregnant with the illegitimate son of a drug kingpin/politician, Doug and Andy became coyotes, and Celia was kidnapped by her daughter. That's the definition of unrealistic, and frankly I thought the show was practically unrecognizable.

I still have to check out the new episode.

That's like half the draw of the show, I think.

I dunno, it used to be really funny, but Season 4 really wasn't. It was more shock than actual humor.

But yeah, this show has me all sorts of conflicted. It's just the situation keeps getting more and more just fucked up, awful and honestly kind of hard to watch, yet, because of the potential I know it has, I keep watching. But S05, E02 was by far and away the only episode so far that has made me kind of debate not watching this anymore....

I'm with you on that. I still really like Weeds and think it's worth watching. It's just not the great show I used to rant and rave about anymore. When I think back on how great things used to be when Nancy was dealing with her kids just being weird and rebellious, struggling to sell pot on a college campus, feuding with the planning commision... I get extremely nostalgic...
I mean, Celia is now shacked up with a guerilla rebellion group? and Shane has become some savvy junior criminal.

Nancy is pregnant with the head of the Tijuana mafia's baby... icon_roll.gif

I agree with a lot of people who say the show went downhill when Conrad left, but based on the end of season 4 and beginning of this season I think it's going to fall even further. That said I'll still be watching

I feel the same way. I was just talking to someone else about it, and it's like, if I wasnt emotionally invested in these people, and the story of thier lives, I would not be watching the show. There is very little hope for any of them, and it's just so shitty.

    Episode 2 spoilers:
I mean the end basically ends with Nancy drinking and smoking while pregnant, which made me hate her. Im not a crazy pro-life person or anything, but man watching her do that stuff really really bothered me. I felt really uncomfortable.

And then, to top it off, she's pretty much raped. It's Nancy, who has had 'random suprise sex' since Season 1 (with that baseball player guy), so as weird as it is to say, it's HARD to determine whats really rape to her. That in itself is fucked up. But I was thinking 'This is unnecessary and purely to shock the viewer, and disgusting.', but then started to think - no, this is purely to shock NANCY. Esteban is a fucked up guy, and youre his bitch, and he's going to do whatever he wants and then kill you. It's just so so so sad and messed up.

I just don't like how the show can't make up it's mind. The world Nancy is living in, and the world Celia is living in, can not exist in the same universe. Nancy is literally being fucked over by drug lords -- but Celia can re-arrange guns, knives and ammo in front of 2 guards for a warlord, after she was told to leave, and be ok? In Nancy's world she would have been killed for sticking around seconds after he told her to leave. I just can't seem to balance the quirky funny take on mexican warlords, with the gritty and more likely realistic depiction of them.

I also can't find ANYONE to really love anymore, other than Andy maybe. Shane is just kinda messed up, and Silas and Doug are at a dead end. Andy should be able to fuck whoever he'd like, but Im sure because of his responsibilites now that will have sad consequences too. I miss Andy and Doug - the people smugglers. That was by far the best use of them.

I do still like Dean, and I actually really loved that Guillermo showed up again and is pissed. It's just like, I will keep watching, and WANT to know what happens next, but the show is just so so so wrong.

Roy Till is my favorite charecter on the show, by far. He is the perfect balance of funny, quirky and serious. His whole story - from Peter's partner (jeez - Id LOVE if Nancy would ever mention Peter again), to a cop with a vendetta, to a GAY cop with a vendetta, then what happened to his boyfriend...

So glad Roy is back in a bad bad badass way.

Eeeeeh - the way she acted or whatever (I cant remember the exact quote) when he said something about his baby made me think it may be foreshadowing her lying. The quote on the box of the baby thing, when she read it.

Although he did say "Its a boy, and its mine." didn't he? Oh well.

I think the last 2 episodes have been really really good. It's getting back to the quirky/funny style and still staying somewhat serious. I am very sad about Roy Till. Very very sad.

Yeah that was an episode highlight. THATS the type of seriousness I want injected in the show. It's quirky and funny - but the seriousness should come from the fact these kids are so beyond messed up now, not from "oh man those drug lords mean buisness!" One is a seriousness that compels me to keep watching, the other is a cliche from every movie and tv show involving mexico.

I really liked Andy's speech to him too. Sylas is also becoming quite the awesome, mature older brother. Taking the "family buisness" and actually doing it legally.

My wildcard prediction for the season finale?

Andy files for custody of the children, leaving Nancy with Esteban and trying to step up. I can see the hilarious "you be Judah" plotline actually becoming a revelation to Andy that being Judah and being a provider and a good dad is something he should be doing.

My guess is that Esteban curbs her and takes the baby.

Also that the Rebel Leader guy is somehow key to getting rid of Esteban when this irritates nancy.

I think the legal pot shop will fail somehow, just because Doug is invovled - but they had to explore it a little, owing to the swing in real-life law and enforcement in Cali since the show started.

I actually hope Doug makes it somewhat successful. Sylas has pretty much ignored most of what he's said - but at least in the percent vs. monthly sum argument, DOUG was right.

I just really want Doug to get back to that "functioning pothead" level he was at in the 1st couple seasons. He was hilarious, constantly stoned, but knew enough to be on the city council, be somewhat respected and actually help Nancy launder money. I mean - he pretty much cooked the books for Nancy's bake shop and did a damn good job.

I know he's had his downward spiral, but I almost see him going the way Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson have - a character that was really, really stupid, but had enough brains to be good at something sometimes, turned into a barely functioning retarded person for the sake of laughs. Doug only knows one thing in his whole life, and it's accounting. I really hope they let him get back to that, because it was funny watching him get the munchies and go off on tangents in between actual bouts of really really good work.

I think Doug's involvement may have actually tipped Nancy's scale towards approval of the venture for this very reason. Sylas definitely has a greenthumb (the loss of those clones is a shame) and passion for the product, but would probably be in way over his head with every other aspect of running a business. Doug will certainly be a useful partner, just keep him away from the product.

I think I've said it before in other threads, but I'm with you. I'm still gonna watch the show but I wouldn't recommend it to someone like I did season's 1-3. Celia is useless, I dunno what they think they can do with her that they haven't done already and seem to be retreading her storyline. Based on this season I'd rather watch the Silas and Doug show with special guest Andy once in awhile.

I'm also finding Nancy less and less likable. It has nothing to do with ethics, it's more that I'm tired of the whole "dazed / apathetic" bit she's been doing for most of last season and all of this season. Stuff like her...
pinning down the teacher and giving him some stern lecture in a bored monotone voice and not really caring what Shane does isn't funny anymore
    .

Also on that note I don't really like Shane either, I think his acting was much better before puberty.
