[Let's Play] Velvet Assassin - Set 10 - And so the stabbing ends
KlykaDO you have anySPARE BATTERIES?Registered Userregular
Velvet Assassin (previous, working title: Sabotage) is a stealth action video game for Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows, released in North America on April 28, 2009. The game is inspired by a real life World War II secret agent/saboteur Violette Szabo. Players take on the role of Violette Summer as she goes behind enemy lines to thwart the German war machine. The game shares many similarities with Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, No One Lives Forever, and the Hitman series.
Players have to hide in the shadows in order to avoid being detected. Violette will have a purple aura surrounding her when she is completely invisible to the enemy. This aura will fade as she moves into light and hence visibility. If she is detected, she will either have to fight off the guard or escape. The game employs a special lifeline if detected called "Morphine Mode". If triggered, a cutscene will play out where the hospitalized Violette convulses and is administered a dose of morphine by a military nurse. Once returning to the game, the game world will temporarily freeze, giving the player the opportunity to execute any remaining enemies. Players will have limited use of the Morphine lifeline. Furthermore as the game progresses, players will be afforded the opportunity to select the type of upgrades they would like - depending on gameplay style. As a stealth-based game, lighting plays an important role.
Hello everyone,
I'm now starting my new Let's Play, the aforementioned "Velvet Assassin".
Since I've always been a fan of stealth games I wanted to do this one for some time now.
Again, this is a blind run and I will probably die thousands of deaths because of some crazy German Ubermensch spotting me from a mile away.
So if you enjoy watching a German guy play as a British woman running around stabbing Nazis, then I welcome you to your new home away from home!
Thanks for starting this. Stealth based games are some of my favorites, but I've heard mixed things about this one. Nice to see real gameplay for it. On the fence about buying it, though. All the corridor stealth leaves me somewhat hesitant...
On the subject of the colt in the locker and the zombie nazis, perhaps what you're observing is the girl succumbing to a fever dream or psychotic nightmare while laying there in pain in the opening credits? It'd be nice to see if the game gets increasingly more trippy or horrific as the girl bleeds out in that bed.
EDIT: That's creepier than I meant it to sound. To clarify: I'm wondering if the weird artstyle and inconsistencies is the developer's attempt at showing these missions as memories-turned-nightmares due to the main character's wounded condition in the opening credits.
I'm still in two minds bout this game, as from the start when i heard about the initial premise i thought, 'cool', but then as the development progressed, i realised just how fucking disrespectful the devs have actually been to the memory of the real Violet Szabo.
Not that i'm saying that any game with a historical connection needs to be accurate down to the last detail, obviously, but i think this one goes a bit far.
Uh, but that has nothing to do with the LP; looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Aren't Let's Play threads supposed to be about games that are good or enjoyably bad?
Nope. For some of us, it's a good way to play backlog games and have a reason to keep playing them. I think you need to meet these requirements for an LP: it's a videogame.
Thanks, Klyka, this was entertaining. Although, I don't think that morphine business they gave her was a very good eye deer.

Not enough lime in the world. This is the whole point. As long as you're having fun then it's all good.
On topic, great set mate. Laughed my ass off like usual.
The only concern with blind running this is death count and there will be plenty of it by the end from all the reviews I've read. This game is hardcore stealth and makes no apologies about it. My recommendation is editing backtracking out since this game is the definition of linear. No funny moments to be had here really since the game is rather serious in tone. Well, except that morphine trip. That's just plain ridiculous.

Yeah, it's my intention to edit out the moment I have to replay a section more than once. I actually already did it in this set.
And no funny moments? Clearly you have not yet watched the videos.

I've always thought the mark of a good LP is one where not only is the game fun to watch in some form, but the narrator keeps it entertaining. If it's merely just a playthrough, I could just do that myself.
So I noticed this is a blind run and also an LP and you're playing it on agent.
Agent isn't actually all that much harder, but the enemies being more sensitive while you're wearing the SS uniform might mean that you'll ruin some dialogue between the guards. I don't know if you care or not, just saying.

Ah ok, that's good to know. I don't really care THAT much, but I'll try to keep it in mind. Thanks Panny.

Some LPS are just that -- a playthrough the LPer does for themselves. Of course, I think I speak for all us LPers in G&T that we do our best to try to make them entertaining should others decide they would like to watch our escapades.

Like I said, to me at least, the difference between a good LP and an alright one is those two factors. I'm not trying to bash styles. Everyone has a different approach to them and people have different tastes when it comes to watching them. However, the more successful ones are ones that mesh both well.

I think it would be more helpful if instead of talking about LPs in general and what you think they should do you could just, you know, tell me how you think about mine?

Honestly, I don't like this game and watching it in any format probably won't change my mind. It's not your fault. This game is just too frustrating and boring for my tastes.
Don't pay attention to the naysayers Klyka! I am still enjoying this LP.
This, right here, this kind of post is probably why PA LPs are so godawful.
Do listen to critism because otherwise you keep making the same low quality crap and you're no better than a fanfiction writer. Like the Mirror's Edge LP, that guy listened to critisms and, while he didn't fix everything, at least he listened and really put forth an effort to make it watchable.
Oh, sorry. I forgot that when people were complaining that it was a bad game to LP, and I said I still enjoyed it, that it would make Klyka complacent and he would somehow become a bad LPer. I guess I'll go back to criticizing people and generalizing about the entire forum.
God damn, I have to stop complimenting people, it never does any good. Lesson learned, and now hopefully back to the LP.

Erm, no, you kinda missed the point. Saying "Don't listen to them, this is perfect!" is not good. Saying "I really enjoy this!" is perfectly fine.
God damn I'm just terrible. I just saw were you said that this kind of comment is why PA LP's are so godawful. I didn't realize that I said it was perfect, let me go edit that part out.

Guys, it's ok, take a breather.
Goomba is absolutely right, I should and will listen to criticism as well as praise.
That's why before I said it would be more helpful if people commented about my LP in this thread and not LPs in general.
I think I am on the right track with this LP from a technical point of view, everything else is subjective anyway.
Set 02 will be up later today!

So, I see this game subscribes to the Tenchu style of Asassination.
Kill or Die yelling "What the fuck, how did he see me!?"
That aside, I was expecting the game to look a lot worse. I mean, it doesn't look like something I'd have fun playing, but it seems...well, playable, even if you're constantly questioning 'why' to yourself while doing so.

Not really. It's generally extremely predictable what an enemy will and will not be able to see if you're any good at it.
And some interesting things can happen. For instance, while carrying a corpse, it's extremely possible for you to be invisible, but for the corpse to still be visable so the AI goes to investigate, but isn't alerted in the same way it would be as if it saw you.

Morphine lifeline sounds a little silly though.

My schedule is usually Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Of course sometimes it doesn't quite work out that way.
Yeah, I picked it up now.

So much rage, this game will be a big test in self control.
It looks as though there will be no friend in here.

I enjoyed your Dark Sector LP Klyka, this one looks cool too.
Think I got a bit better at the stealth aspect, but still some rage in here. Have fun!
Can't say I saw this one coming. But it's certainly a game I wouldn't mind watching.
Was that before or after you saw the separate climbing cutscene/animations?
