I need more of it. I'm sure an easy answer would be to drink milk more regularly, but as it turns out milk is my kryptonite (I'm lactose intolerant, yay). I know that I could go to a doctor to get pills to supplement my lack of intake, but I was wondering if there were any other foods or methods I could go about to do it, because at this point I don't want to start putting out money for a perscription.

Depending on how lactose intolerant you are, cheeses may be your best bet (As I understand, hard cheeses are usually processed better by lactose intolerant people).

Over here, there's also orange juice with added calcium on the market. I seem to recall other foodstuffs with it too.

You can get calcium pills in addition to your daily vitamin for dirt cheap, usually in the multivitamin section.

By dirt cheap I mean like $15 for a 2 year supply.

I need to take a calcium supplement for my depo. It's cheap and easy though it's a bit chalky. I just get generic Calcitrate.

Remember milk generally has vitamin D added to it. You need vitamin D for your body to absorb that calcium. If you get a decent amount of sunlight then don't worry.

I drink orange juice that has calcium added to it and take multivitamins/vitamin D.

I was taking calcium/vitamin D but I guess I just got lazy and tired of the taste. cooked broccoli&butter is delicious.

Soy milk has loads of added calcium, so do many brands of orange juice. Or you can get calcium+vitamin d pills at any pharmacy or grocery store. Be careful not to get too much calcium, as overloading can cause constipation and calcium blocks the absorption of other nutrients (so don't take it at the same time as other vitamins or medications).

Don't a lot of antacids like tums or rolaids have calcium?

Tums does, and I have a big ol' case of them for my heartburn yay. They're super chalky though. I guess that's one avenue of this.

Soy Milk I'm not a fan of.

if you want supplementation in pill form,

try looking for a local store that carries calcium citrate malate (also called calcimate) 500 to 1000g a day is the sweet spot for most people per dose so 2 pills a day of 500g (one morning one afternoon) or 1 pill of 1000g (anytime) would do fine

dont be misled and end up taking calcium carbonate, while its cheaper its also not easily absorbed and definitely avoid "coral calcium supplements as they arent proven to be that useful and a lot of companies do not use actual okinawa coral calcium

Drink lactose free milk? You should be able to find it at the supermarket, in the "long life milk" section.

I, too, am lactose intolerant - slightly odd kind of intolerance that makes me hyper, scatter-brained and forgetful. I've been on soy milk for ten years now and I've had no troubles. Also, if you don't like the taste of soy milk, try some other brands. Some taste like Satan's own recipe; others taste pretty good. Often, of course, it depends on how much sugar they've put in, but there are some brands that taste good without being liquid sugar.

Also, depending on where you shop, you can get lactose-free milk. There's only one brand I regularly see where I live in Australia, and it's UHT. You might be lucky, and there might be fresh lactose-free where you live.

I generally tell men to avoid soy milk, it is a phytoestrogen.

They do, but the kind of calcium used in calcium supplements is handled more efficiently by the body than antacids. Calcium supplements, milk, and soy milk are also (usually) supplemented with vitamin D, which is needed to absorb and process the calcium.

I generally tell men to avoid soy milk, it is a phytoestrogen.

    supabeast is right
there's no direct link on soy and low male testosterone levels or raised levels of estrogen
the soy milk does contain a few estrogenic compounds but their effect on the body is negligible

While Im not saying it will make henroid grow breasts and start buying short skirts (A man can dream though) It still is something that I personally would avoid given the alternatives. I will admit that I at one time drank silk and it was delicious albeit a little expensive. Essentially he's got enough options between milk alternatives and other foods high in calcium.

[edit] I will also eat tofu from time to time but nothing I sustain myself on daily.

They also sell those supplements in chews, like chocolate chews, I'm not sure of how much lactose they contain but they can make it more bearable to take it.

A note on the supplement, my understanding is that your body can only really process so much calcium at a time, so getting 100% of your calcium in 1 shot doesn't work, especially if you don't have any food with it.

Don't forget that soy milk is very popular in Asia, particularly amongst Chinese (China, Malaysia and Singapore are ones I definitely know of). It's kind of related to the fact that a lot of Chinese are lactose-intolerant (the Chinese side of my family included) - it's something about them lacking the enzyme to process lactose because there simply has been little need for it in previous generations. For instance, my brother could handle lactose until the family started going lactose-free about ten years ago. Since then, he's been lactose-intolerant because his body's stopped producing that particular enzyme.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with Chinese dudes, is there? :P
