Laptop on the fritz

My laptop has developed a sudden and frustrating tendency to shutdown. Yesterday it did it whenever it was bumped or jostled, and today it shutdown without any provocation at all. The easy conclusion was that something's loose in there, but I don't trust myself to crack this thing open.

Warranty's expired, and I'm wondering if there's a better option than taking it in to the Geek Squad and eating the cost.

Having worked at Geek Squad for two years, don't do it.

How old is this laptop? It will be about $200+ to fix whatever it is (even if it's a simple as taking the laptop apart and connecting a wire) because they know you won't do it. You MIGHT be able to negotiate with them, but they will almost always send it out and not work on it in-store.

'bout a year and a half old, which makes me wonder if I'd purchased the extended warranty. I'll have to dig that stuff up to make sure. It's an ASUS, if anybody else has had similar issues.

If you still have the credit card you used to purchase it, then the store can look it up for you.

But yeah, just to ship it off to the service center is/was $59. Then they'll call you with an estimate. If you decline the estimate you don't get the money back. If you accept the estimate, then that $59 gets applied to the total repair.
