Lightweight DVD Ripper

I have a DVD I need to rip. It's not DRM protected or anything; it's home movies from my family. I don't want to have to install a big ol' program just to do it, though, because the ripping is going to be happening on my family's computer and that thing is cluttered enough as it is. Basically I'm looking for the lightest, simplest DVD ripper, like Media Player Classic and foobar2000 are super lightweight video and audio players respectively.

DVD Decrypter. Works fantastically. Google it.\

For burning it, lightweight programs include DVD Shrink (which modifies the size of the DVD file, and re-authors it), CDBurnerXP which burns it, and Handbrake/AutoGK which converts the video into handy dandy ipod/iphone or xvid/divx format.

Note, if you use the re-encoding programs (Handbrake/AutoGK) those take the most processor cycles of any of the above programs.

If the DVD is not encrypted, DVD Shrink will do the re-authoring job to fit the movie in a 4 gigabytes blank disk, there is no need for DVD Decrypter.

By the way, DVD Shrink actually uses Nero or a third party burning software for the final process.

    DVD Decrypter for ripping movies

CDBurnerXP, or if you're using vista, burning to DVD is built into the OS, for burning.

I wouldnt' use DVD shrink, simply becuase the biggest advantage to that is that it can compress the contents of a Dual Layer DVD down to fit on a single layer DVD for burning. Since these are home movies, there's a 99% chance they're already single layer anyway, so no need to compress the video.

Imgburn is made by the guy who did dyddecrypter once he was forced to abandon development on dvddecrypter. Has a friendly little UI though it does not defeat encryption. It's lightweight and will do CD-ROMs too. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as I heard about it here.

if it's not encrypted, you should just be able to drag the movie file from the disk, no?

Red'd for un-truth. IF it's un-encrypted, you technically can just copy the files off. It depends on what you want to do with it though. a DVD is just a Video_ts folder with .VOB files as the video, usually broken into chunks. However, that's not very useful because the VOB files usually end/begin at stupid times in the video, say, in the middle of a sentence. on a DVD player that's fine, it's designed for that. But if you want a good, usable file on the computer, you need something that will properly rip/convert the file to the format of your choice.

Yeah, I don't know what I'm supposed to do with a bunch of .VOBs. That's not a helpful format. I also figured they would be soundless because it has an Audio_ts folder.

What about putting an AVI on a disc for like, television watching? What would I use then? I guess I'd be popping the disc into a DVD player.

Okay, so it turns out a DVD ripper isn't what I needed (this is what I get for not being a DVD watching kind of person). I need a program to take the .VOB or whatever the heck it is on the DVD file and edit it so that I can just get a clip off the DVD. Windows Movie Maker won't import the .VOB.

You could try Virtualdub and the mpeg plugin for that task, but it is not so easy to use.

Commercial applications such as mpeg-vcr or TMPGEnc DVD Author can do the job too, but they cost money.

    Good luck.

I ended up using AutoGK. Worked like a charm. Thanks for your help everyone.
