However, I can't get it off with any sort of USB drive and work blocks both youtube andgmail. I tried e-mailing it through hotmail but they say it's too large. Can someone tell me what other options there are?

Get a new job that doesn't block those.

Or maybe... burn it to a CD...?

edit: better make that a DVD....

How big a file are we talking here? Box.net's free account allows uploads up to 25Mb per file. There are lots of online file storage things like that. Or even something like yousendit.com or mailbigfile.com

    How big is the file?

If you're in a hard bind I can create an account on my server for you to use to transfer the file, there's no size limit, and it's on FiOS 20/20, but I'd want some assurances that it's a legitimate movie and not some thieving of company secrets......

Oh hey file size probably is a bit relevant. It's a 148 megabyte 15 minute long video of a skit from our department's Christmas party.

Yea, if you can't find somewhere to pop that video to just drop me a line I can create a log in on my server for you to abuse briefly...

Are you planning on trying to put it onto Vimeo/Youtube, or just snagging it for yourself?

Mostly just snag it for myself to show friends, though I wouldn't be surprised if I put part of it on youtube at some point to throw into [chat]. I'll send you a PM when I get home to work it out and see if I can pull it off on Monday morning before class starts.

Can you explain why you can't use a USB device to transfer it? Have you approached your IT department with your desire to get a copy of it? They can probably move it to a computer with a cd/dvd burner.

If it's a laptop, can you bring it home and connect it to local network?
    Then use file sharing.

If a USB drive will not work then a portable burner probably won't work either, but it's one thing to try.

If you have install rights, you could install WinRAR, compress the file, and split it into smaller chunks. Send each chunk in a separate email.

Just a plain old File Splitter would work too, if you can install software.

It's an army laptop and after a recent issue they patched them to not allow any type of external storage, from USB flash drives to our (now useless) USB DVD drives. Which is a major pain considering the amount of information getting moved around at a language school. But it hadn't even occurred to me to ask our IT head, she'd actually probably be more than happy to burn it onto a disc for me. So I'll likely just go with this solution and only move to using someone's server if for some how this doesn't work out.

Though thanks to everyone who's offered.

Actually, the comment about it being an Army laptop has me slightly concerned, cause those things are monitored like a hawk, and my server is not exactly something you want everyone looking at...

Also if you can't install software but have MS Office, one could write a Visual Basic for Applications script that acts as a file splitter. Say the word and I can write a quick procedure and post it. Only if IT can't or won't do it, that is.
